Pastern/coronet band issue.. anyone have any ideas?

I just rescued this 4 year old Friesian cross gelding last night.
He has this nasty looking hind leg and is extremely lame on it. He will see a vet ASAP but I’m wondering if anyone has ever seen/dealt with this and if so what was the diagnosis, prognosis, etc. (I’m well aware that it could be several things). I’m trying to stay optimistic but don’t want to get my hopes up for recovery.

Poor guy, bless you for helping him. He is very stoic. Best guess on injury is a traumatic injury- fence wire maybe.

Could it be a nasty abscess? I can’t tell how much the wound is higher than the coronary band

No advice, just jingles that there is not still something nasty buried in there. Hopefully he just needs some cleaning up and time and he’ll be good as new.

He arrived at quarantine today and got his feet done since the farrier was there, they definitely think it is an old injury from being caught up in something… really hoping there’s something we can do for him, he’s still very lame :worried:farrier said his fronts looked pretty freshly trimmed and that he had front shoes pretty recently… they said he was an angel for the farrier and it such a nice boy…

Ouch. That does look like it would be painful to walk on.

Are X-rays next?

Oh that poor thing. Thank you for rescuing him. What are you calling him?

I’m not a better but I’d put good money down that those fever lines/event lines coincide with that traumatic injury. I agree that maybe x-rays are next to decide course of action. Could be anything from foreign body to fractured coffin bone (from traumatic injury). Wonder if he got caught on something and severed it to the bone. :frowning:

Keep us updated and jingling for you two.

What a kind face he has. Good on you for taking him on, and all the jingles from me and my crew.

Yep, X-rays next and hope it’s something that we can fix, or at least improve to get him more comfortable… he certainly can’t go on in the state he’s in :worried:

I still need to think of a name! I was waiting to see more of him before I decided… just really hoping it’s something we can really improve because if not it’s going to be a tough call… certainly can’t let him live in the state of pain he’s currently in from it :disappointed:

I’d call him Sweet Pea, until you know if he can be saved.
