Pasture mister set up

I have a pasture boarded mare that struggles in the summer. My vet casually mentioned I should install a pasture mister. He said it so casually that I felt kind of silly being like…tell me everything?!

I’ve never seen one or even heard about one before. Is this a thing people do? Has anyone done one DIY?

Help a beefy mare out. I’d happily fork out money and beg a barn owner to install anything that could help.

They are pretty common in other areas of livestock keeping.
Lots of examples if you go to a farm show type thing (in the summer they are very popular place to stand for a bit).

It is just a fan with a water supply.

I hate saying this way (because I usually fail with looking for things), but looking up livestock misting fan will get you lots of hits on ideas how to do it.

I DIY’d misters in my stalls both outdoor and indoor (no fans)… the biggest problem I can see if you are in a boarding situation is the constant water supply. You’ll need to have a hose dedicated to that with the water running the entire time. If you want a fan misting system, you’ll need power too.

I just used regular ol’ cheap garden misting supplies… it won’t last forever but the components are easily replaced.

Every summer, I buy a new set of misters on Amazon ($30ish). They only last one season because I’m on irrigation, so they very easily get clogged and aren’t worth the effort to try to unclog each year. I have a metal MD barn, and hang them along the outside of the barn using these. I use a hose timer - they run for twenty minutes every hour and it does a good job of keeping the area cool and the bugs down.

With that said, I’m looking into a permanent solution this year.

Curious to see others input, this would be great for us and the spigot is right by his dry lot. No electricity though.

Somewhat similar. I’m wondering about running a heavy duty electric cord to an industrial fan and then could I have a ring style mister attached. If everything was on a timer and the spigot had a splitter so it didn’t have to be unhooked for the water trough it could be pretty hands off.

My instinct is that the cost of running the fan 8 hours plus a mister for 4-5 hours would be way less than the $$$ I dropped last summer fighting allergies primarily triggered by sweating and bugs.
