All you knowledgeable people: can you give me some insight as to this mare’s suitability (pedigree-wise) for a sport horse. She’s by Flatter (by AP Indy) out of Portage Lake by Two Punch. I realize the horse in front of me is most important.
No link - but A.P. Indy is emerging as a sporthorse sire.
We are VERY pleased with our sport horse TB and ISH youngsters that have AP Indy as a grandsire (dam’s side). Great bodies and fabulous temperaments!!
Two Punch is very very popular in sporthorse pedigrees in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Great! Thanks for the information. Since I’m wanting a good temperament (and I’m told she is sensible) this sounds good.
A lot of Two Punch kids can be lacking in the sensibility department… so if you’ve found a sensible one, you’ve found a real gem!
3x3 inbreeding to Mr. P is not my favorite thing to see, though. And I am NOT one to usually say that. I love Mr. P’s contributions to the breed and I’m not one to be deterred by linebreeding, even when it’s fairly close up. But tight inbreeding to Mr. P like that… not so much. Horses with multiple crosses to him up close (first 3 generations) tend to be the type of TB that’s put out of work at the drop of a hat IMO. Just be sure to evaluate the horse in front of you. But sometimes, “too slow” or “no interest” are codes for “all the money in the world couldn’t keep this horse in work for two days in a row.”

Dream on. The sheer volume of A.P. Indy descendants will almost guarantee a few good ones in sport from good mares. That doesn’t make him a good sport horse line.
Thanks Texarkana; The inbreeding to Mr. P was the first thing that I saw too. I haven’t seen this horse yet, (going tomorrow) and couldn’t get on Equibase to take a look at her record other than 5-0-0-0 to see any gaps. But was curious about the rest of it.
I’m sure there are plenty of tough as nails 3x3 Mr. P horses out there, and there are so many other factors at play here. It’s just the ones I had were the type of horses that drive you to drink with their constant issues! I’d rather see four crosses to him in the fourth and fifth generations than two on the catalog page.

bold mine - and will agree… that is a heavy dose very close - however, there’s two mares, one is a filly with only a handful of starts and the other looks like a decent campaigner with over 30… so i’d be doing my homework here and sussing out if that mare is a sound worker or not.
flatter himself reminds me in every way of Mr P - not a bad thing, but i’d be looking at this mare’s hind end especially with that much mr P - IME may be more straight behind than is desireable.
i do like the bottom - more than the top - love danzig, love grey dawn, love hoist the flag.
Thank you. Went to see her today. Big bodied, big boned, and a really nice mover. Very green, forward, but seemed sensible. Has had one foal. Barefoot right now. Decisions, decisions.
If you like her, get her.
Easy decision!
