Pegasus World . . .
Do we know what time this race starts?
NBC Sports is airing 90-minutes worth of coverage from 4:30pm - 6pm EST. I’d assume like the Derby this will go off closer to 5:35 EST. They’ll want to maximize wagers and you have to assume some delays with undercard races.

Promo/teasers with Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Champion Conor McGregor [no real idea who he is but has a large following]:

Mixed martial arts was recognized by Meryl Streep at the Golden Globe Awards during her whining acceptance diatribe. Who knows but the martial arts fan base might be good for horse racing. They sure won’t be interested in watching any of her movies.

Her comment that martial arts is not art certainly went over your head.

The Pegasus has brought attention to racing in my little corner of the world. Several coworkers that normally only talk “horses” when the KY derby is on have started a pool. I usually don’t do betting at work because it’s always been football or basketball, but I’m in on this one.

Why are people running their horses in the Pegasus when it appears to be a one or two horse race? From what I recall seeing in another thread, it’s not likely a 3rd place finisher will make much from the $1M investment after paying the trainer, jockey, etc.

Are people hoping that a 3rd place finish in a G1 would boost a stallions prestige?

it may seem like a 2 horse race but its really anyone’s game. Its a horse race in every sense of the word. I personally hope to see a very emotional Art Sherman as CC goes out a winner.

Ditto ^ I’ve become very fond of CC. :love-struck:

I’ve become unsure of Bafferts honesty, always wonder if he has found the “magic cocktail”. Dunno, just a feeling.

Why are the others there? 'Cause you just never know.

While it does seem that Arrogate and CC are the class of the field and one of the two should win, it isn’t unheard of for a long shot to win or hit the board in a race. I suspect for some, just visibility for their horse, for others maybe really a chance, for some I have no clue

I know when I watch a race I listen to the TVG talking heads and their comments on how a specific horse should be the odds on favorite and walk away from the field just to see that favorite fade and some completely unexpected horse take the win.

I think Art Sherman will be emotional whether CC wins or not as it will be CC’s last race.

From the slot owner’s position …

No starter = $0
Three legged runner who hasn’t won a race in two years & wouldn’t defeat a field of $5,000 claimers at Mountaineer yet finishes 12th in the PWC = $250,000

Nobody knows the actual economics of who gets what (trainer, owner, jockey - relative to the slot owner) although one would expect that the slot owner might get most/all of the purse back then some kick out $$ as a courtesy to the stable for playing the game and failing to win.

By the way Gun Runner is not entirely out of the picture to replace one of the field. The quarantine on the New Orleans Fair Grounds Racetrack facility could be lifted January 21th.

I like Arrogate. I think he is a lovely looking specimen of a horse. He is a beast. I watch his work outs regularly and his stride, the way he moves, his power is jaw dropping. He comes up on horses like they are standing still. With that being said he’s a 17hh, now, early 4 year old. He is massive and we all know the soundness issues Thoroughbreds of this size have who campaign on only dirt and are hard runners: big brown, Dortmund, etc all end up having feet issues and many others have soundness issues. I hope he stays sound. I think his pedigree is extremely intriguing. Being a song of Unbridled’s song, there is Caro and Fappiano and Le Fabuleaux up close. On the dam side, you have the whos who: distorted humor, meadowlake, deputy minister, vice regent, danzig, mr prospector. While he is doubled up on Northern dancer on the dam side; I think it’s far enough back we have some less of a soundness concern.

I think this horse could also have a helluva career on turf but bob doesn’t tend to go that way with his horses. Dortmund could do very well on turf also

Great side story involving Tom Durkin.

No details about the actual dollars involved but a Gulfstream-based Daily Racing Form writer tweeted this out today (1/19/2017):

“Pegasus purse remains $12 million but 4th 5th 6th finishers receive larger chunk of revenue sharing from 1st,2nd, 3rd finishers per Tim Ritvo”

One has to think that supporters are concerned with the 2018 running (and beyond) having little financial appeal if you finish 4th [or worse] and stand no chance of breaking even whatsoever. Therefor tossing revenue sharing from tickets, concessions, broadcast rights, merchandise disproportionately to finishers off the board “helps” sell the PWC in the future.

Like the Kentucky Derby, TVG will air undercard races but the ‘big show’ will be exclusively NBC’s to broadcast live.

One troubling sign (although maybe the impasse will be broken shortly) is that Stronach Group [Gulfstream] hasn’t cut an acceptable deal with Churchill Downs Inc. or TwinSpires. Failure to reach a resolution could shut out a significant number of bettors and their revenue from this first running of the $12-million race.

Ouch on the Stronach v Twinspires vs Churchill Downs deal. Loosing bettors is not, IMO, a good idea on an inaugural running of a new race “format”.

I did see that Fair Grounds may lift quarantine as early as the 21st. One roadblock out of the way for Gun Runner but he still would have to be allowed into Florida and Gulfstream. Wonder whose slot he’d take (as I don’t think I’ve seen that.)

Welcome back Glimmer. Always love your insight.
This is an interesting race. I wonder with this race on US soil would people still travel to Dubai?

There’s a deal in place for Gun Runner to run for Ruis Racing if the quarantine at FG lifts.

Will be interesting and I think maybe a bit more of a race (I still think it’s a 2 horse race) if Gun Runner can make it in…

Gun Runner replacing War Envoy certainly does up the chances of the entry hitting the board for slot owner Ruis Racing. I’m still of the camp that believes this is effectively a two horse race.

If it ends up Chrome / Arrogate as a 1-2 finish I’d suspect the exacta payout will be relatively small ($2 wager yielding < $10)

CC had his final work this morning. Turning in a quick time & doing so very effortlessly.

Arrogate’s final work --video

TVG said that Gun Runner may not run as FL will be asking for tests and trainer doesn’t want to risk a positive and quarantine his barn… :frowning:

Didn’t see anything on this on BloodHorse yet so don’t know how true it is.
