PEMF therapy. Bemer/ Centurion

Just curious, anyone use either of these? Opinions on either one?

Bump

I was considering trying PEMF for my horse. So I will echo your same curiosity!

I’ve had PEMF therapy done to my horse and saw no results from it. Watching the machine work and pulse was interesting but I found no difference in how my horse moves/works/ or feels. The person who did the PEMF treatment recommended I get it done another 4-5 times to see a real difference. I think it was more for the money. It’s ended up causing one horse to go lame at my barn, she stated it’s because the pulsing caused an abscess to pop too quickly.

Another girl whose horse has kissing spine asked about it to relieve some pain for the horses back, the machine will only relieve pain in the spine area if used a minimum of 5 times according to the representative. Again there’s probably better alternatives instead of the $100 or so for each session

It it might work for some but out of the 10 or so people who tried it at my barn, none of us saw any major noticeable difference. It’s also recommended to ride immediately after it’s done and you will see the major difference in your horse within 72 hours (I didn’t.) Hope this helps. Answering from mobile so hopefully the post doesn’t look too crazy.

IMHO… it does a good job promoting circulation and reducing inflammation. It isn’t a one-time thing. I do twice a week minimum for at least 4 weeks on injuries. I’ve thermal imaged them before and after treatment and the difference can be drastic.

That said, I don’t think it’s any sort of miracle cure. It’s one tool amongst many others to help manage injuries.

I can’t speak to Bemer or Centurion. But I was shocked at how much my one retired mare’s hind end pain improved in a single session.

She has pain throughout her back/hip when you ask her to lift her right hind leg thanks to compensating for an old injury in the left hind leg. Striding out she is fine, it’s just when you lift her hoof and try to hold it up. NSAIDS do nothing, but a single PEMF session helped her tremendously.

Her last PEMF session was in October and the discomfort hasn’t returned to anywhere close to the prior level. I feel like a schmuck for not doing it for her sooner!

With my other horses, I see the same mixed results I see with other forms of body work. Sometimes it can help tremendously, other times not so much. It just depends on what’s going on.

I just wish someone would drop some money into improving the scientific understanding of how it functions.

At that pricem they mayhave been better off doing shockwave

My horse just had his 4th session for his suspensory injury. After 3 sessions he was doing great. I could see a lot of change in his comfort level. But he was right back to square -1 today. He would not stand on his LH and could only tolerate a low level of the electricity.

I never saw him run in his small paddock; perhaps it was snow balling up in his shoes which put a strain on the suspensory???

I am verklempt. I know it is not the fault of the PEMF, but it reminded me that any improvement is not a cure. The PEMF lady said that, once the improvement changed the ?atoms? ?cells? in the area, they stayed changed. I am sure I got my hopes up, but it is still a setback with no discernable cause.

The package I paid for has several more sessions. We shall see.

I have a PEMF machine and use it on myself regularly to control my hip and back pain. I also do it for a few of my clients’ horses and they have reported noticing a difference after just one treatment. Power of the machine and knowledge of the practitioner is important. Doing too high power than the horse is ready for can make them sore.

My physical therapist treats people and horses and just added a Bemer to her arsenal. I’m generally skeptical of these things and the “science” is weak. But she’s such a big fan and has never steered me wrong, so… My gelding gets sore in his hind end due to some old injuries in his legs. I get migraines. So my therapist plopped a blanket on both of us. My guy also got her full therapeutic massage session. He went from sore and snarky to willing and ready to work. I didn’t see a big improvement. We continued to use the blanket on him weekly for a month and he seems to be doing pretty terrific. We also adjusted the Bemer treatments for me and I do feel improvements in my neck and shoulders.
So, anecdotally, it does seem to have a positive effect. It doesn’t hurt to give it a try.

The lady who does the sessions with Goober said it has a good effect on newly injured soft tissue. Sadly. Afer trying a bunch of other treatments, we are now 6 - 7 months into his problem. I guess that means I cannot expect more change than I got (for the number of sessions he had".

For those people who saw a big improvement, how long after the injury was PEMF started? How much improvement can one expect if the sessions start early rather than months down the road?

I tried PEMF on my plantar fasciitis foot and felt immediate and total relief. Lasted for about 2 days, then discomfort gradually returned, but not to previous level.

I tried PEMF on my horses and myself, one time. One of them LOVED it, the other 2 were meh- nothing noticeable either way. On myself it felt like nothing, I had focused it on my neck that is sore. and then about 30 minutes later I was incredibly sore, i had made it very angry, for hours. The next day I felt much better, but then the regular level of stiffness/soreness returned the day after that. I wonder if I had continued with it if i would’ve gotten more out of it- it clearly was doing something. Havent tried it again, mainly due to the cost and my schedule being very challenging.
