Pencil eraser-like growths under the tail: what did I see?

While visiting Costa Rica, I saw a horse that had a large number of growths a bit larger and longer than pencil erasers under his tail. They were smooth, unbroken, close together, and covered much of the hairless area under his tail to his anus. What the heck did I see? Its been years but I can’t shake the image.

The horse was bay tobiano, and the affected area was fully pigmented with black skin.

Look up pics of “equine papillomatosis”. That would be my guess?

Hmm, these growths were smooth, and the skin didn’t have those changes in color or texture.

Non grey horses can still get melanoma. Not common, but not impossible.

Or, is it possible that he was used as a carriage horse and had some weird scarring from a crupper?

Ah, okay. I was picturing pink pencil erasers
