Penn National - Hunt Night (10/12)

Who’s going to Hunt Night at the Penn. National Horse Show? I’m looking forward to the terrier races… as well as the Hunt Teams class.

Can anyone tell me where to find the required appointments for Hunt Night - Hunter Under Saddle/Ladies Hunter Under Saddle? The class is to be judged on performance, manners, suitability of horse and rider and soundness. So how does the judging breakdown to horse or rider?

Thanks for the input in advance:)

The under saddle is judged solely on the horse. however, you should certainly be dressed “the part” for a foxhunting competition. Formal hunt attire is what most folks choose…and the most formal of formal, such as for an Opening Meet or a Holiday meet (shadbelly, top hat, etc.), if you have it. None of Monday’ s classes are “appointments” classes, however…if you don’ t have all the right stuff, you won’ t lose points.

Keep in mind however that the show is run by the USEF, so rules which apply for hunter horse showing also count, i.e. no martingales of any type in an under saddle and certain bits are not allowed…you should read “Riding to Hounds in America” and the USEF rule book for showing in a hunter under saddle if you have more specific questions…or send me a PM.

Good luck…it’ s a really fun night!

I love Hunt Night, especially at Harrisburg–such a great ring to ride in.

Everything’s pretty much as Jennifer said–you can go with either a shad or regular black melton coat. Not sure you can do top hats anymore with the USEF helmet restrictions (I always wore a helmet, even with a shad, as I just don’t like to take the risk of not riding with a helmet). Appointments aren’t necessary.

Have a great time!

Are you and C coming up this year again? I haven’t eaten at the Subway since and I could really go for some of that great, cheap food again!

Thanks ladies

I did some research after posting, and I think I’ve got the gist of what’s involved. I wish I could have found video footage of the particular under saddle class I’ll be doing. I did find a ton of video of the Hunt Teams (mostly at Devon). Still trying to master the stock tie… I love when my husband chuckles at me while I’m practicing in the mirror… his futile attempts are more hilarious.

I’m assuming two rounds being equal, they wouldn’t pin a shad over a frock if otherwise similar turn-out and performances. I truly don’t have any expectations of pinning, but I’d really like to do my best to be as well turned out as possible on a suitable horse.

I’m very much looking forward to going out and enjoying the night (from terrier races to bugle blowing to HUNT TEAMS!!!) Half the barn will be out there with me. So bringing the team for support… as well as my new partners in crime that I typically see at the crack of dawn on Wednesdays and Sundays…

Penn National - Hunt Night

I can’t begin to describe how exhilerating this night was and thanks to all who participated and supported our efforts. Pleasantmeadow has to be hailed as a true disciple of foxhunting now. After just joining she has jumped in with both stirrups and buoyed the rest of us too. I have watched hunt night since long ago at Madison Square Garden and dared to dream I would one day be a part of it. Terrifying and daunting as it was, once I was in that arena with my horse I never felt more alive. As I stare down turning fifty I am thrilled to be having so much fun and still challenging myself. If I were not surrounded by my fellow foxhunters I am sure I would be on the porch in the rocker watching and wondering… how do they do that?

Thanks Red!

I have been having the time of my life out with my Hunt. For way too many years, I have been sitting on the sidelines fearful of taking a chance and wondering - what if!

Harrisburg was such a blast - and I have the photos to prove it! Not posting them here though! It’s such a priveldge to be part of such a fun and supportive group.

Now that I said yes, to the foxhunt clinic this summer I haven’t said no to anything. I’m willing to risk ridicule and limb for what I’m passionate about. This is it. I will do what I can to support my Hunt, and share my story with anyone who will listen.

Next on the list of “can’t say no to’s”: Point to Point race on Sunday. Wish me luck, and pray with me that the incessant rain will stop in time, before my bravery turns into foolishness! Also, that I’ll make it home for my son’s b-day party before company arrives… yup - I’m addicted.
