Pentosan and Vision Problems

Pentosan and vision problems.

Has anyone whose horse was getting treated with Pentosan on a regular basis, had any side effects of permanent vision damage?

Just wondering after reading about this side effect in humans.

We use Adequan and Legend but had considered Pentosan.

I used Pentosan for close to 3 years as maintenance for my senior show horse. We never had any side effects other than some discoloration of the hair coat at the injection site.

Thank you.

Maybe the frequency of the dosing for humans comparatively is relatively intensive compared to for equines? The information is definitely concerning for horses getting Pentosan on a regular basis.

Can you link any sources that directly linked Pentosan use and vision problems in horses? I couldn’t find any when I searched but I may not have been using the right terms.

The sources I found were advertising for lawsuits for Elmiron for humans which is Pentosan. That is why I am asking about horses getting this on a regular and long term basis.

I have used it on my horses for many years on the advice of an FEI vet. I’ve never had any problems, no hair loss, no hair discolouration, no vision issues. I have a client who’s been using it on her horses for the past 7 years, also with no issues.

I’ve wondered this same thing after seeing the ads!

Eye problems in equines are TOUGH to suss out–especially with how much of a specialty eyes are. It sure would take a lot of horses with issues getting to the right people for complex diagnosis for anything to be noticed.

Interesting. The dosage information I found for that medication is 300mg daily. I wonder if the higher total amount contributes to toxicity. 300mg per day x 30 days = 9000mg in humans.

My gelding’s injectable was 250mg/ml.
250mg x 6cc per month = 1500mg total monthly.

That’s a much, much lower concentration of the drug in a much, much larger animal. I wonder if that lessens the impact or not.

Yes; thank you. I think quite possibly the dosing differences which I mentioned previously could be a factor.

Long term use maybe detrimental. For example, I am aware of a horse that got Tildren, over a decade ago that has weird grape sized bony growths around the hind pasterns, that were not there previously. Really weird.

If you look at the list of possible side effects in humans; it definitely gives me pause to using Pentosan on our horses.

Note: I’m in the club that thinks Zimectrin Gold should have been either reformulated or removed from manufacture a decade ago; too.
