I am new to Horse Prerace but have used Pentosan EQ. I just got a bottle of Pentosan Gold from horse prerace. The info on the web sight said the product was equally effective given IM or IA and then under dosage is said to administer IV. I emailed the company 3 times and also tried to call and never got a answer on the best way to administer the product. I ended up giving my 1,000 pound gelding 6cc IM. He is swollen and sore on his next 24 hours after giving it to him. I still can’t get Horse pre race to respond. He will be due for his 2nd shot since I am doing the loading dose and I am not sure if I should give it IV. Any info would be appreciated
I have given this IM to one horse many times with no problem. I just read the bottle and it gives the dose rate as IM, then also states that it is equally effective both IM and IV. Just read the website and I think they mixed up the information…but it does say when given IV, it is a lower dosage. Look at the write-up for the regular pentasan product–that has a accurate write-up.
Considering the company is shadey at best and you’re buying a Rx item without an Rx, it doesn’t much surprise me that you’re seeing a bad reaction. Yes, many people buy these products and see good results, but I would not take a chance injecting such an unregulated product IM or IV into my horse.
JMO.
My bottle says to give IV on the label and mentions nothing about IM. The web sight states dosage is 6cc IV but also effective IM and IA. Today the swelling is completely gone and he seems back to his happy self. I wish PentAussie was available I would use that but I can never find it in stock.
I use it on my horse as well as my friends horse. We both give it IV. The Pentosan Gold can go IM or IV however horses has less chance of reaction IV due to the compounding of Glucosamine in it. We’ve not had any reaction or soreness. My friends horse saw a difference within 2 days. They are feeling great!
The dose changes when you give it IA which is something I have not had experience with. I leave IA up to my vets. IM and IV is the same for this particular compounding.

I have used this product for years with good results however, my horse had the same reaction once with the swollen neck. He couldn’t put his head down to eat. It resolved within 24 hours. The last two times using a different batch my horse has had a weird reaction. I thought it was something else the first time but it happened again today. He gets lethargic, like he has been drugged. Doesn’t want to eat. I am throwing this bottle out. Has anyone else experienced something similar?

I would be very careful about using anything from HorsePreRace.
there are many posts/threads on COTH about the pentosan gold from horse prerace. most of those mention no issues with the regular/non-gold formulation.
