Pentosan, Legend or Adequan ???
Actually I get mine from Abba Vet, who gets it from Wedgewood. Seems to help my teenaged mare with mildly creaky hocks. Not that my anecdote is any more valuable than anyone else’s. She’s actually off it now since I’ve just bred her and I want no extraneous stuff in her body and she’s doing well without it. shrug

I’ll use it again if she seems to need it once she’s foaled. (God willing, ultrasound next week so we’re a long way away) If there is no clear need for it, however, I’d sooner use nothing on any horse. ;)
Totally agree on both using only if there’s a need and not wanting any extraneous stuff during pregnancy. I took my mare off of most everything when she was pregnant.

So, is your ultrasound next week to see if she took or to check on the foal/fetus?

Here’s a link to what I bought.

I get mine (with a faxed in prescription from my vet) from US Compounding for $100 plus $7.95 shipping for 50ml bottle of 250mg/ml. Works out to 8 doses at 6ml each given every 3weeks for active eventing gelding who is a 13yr old OTTB. Works out to $13.50 a dose.

Ultrasound next week will be to check for an embryo. First of many hurdles! I’ve had lots of other mares at my place for foaling, but this is the first one I’ve bred on purpose for me since . . . this mare was born!

If only I could get my vet to write a Rx for it. I might have to find a new vet. sigh I’ve been using the same one for 8 years (and he has been wonderful), but that is a huge savings.

Mine is also a 13yr old OTTB…just an active eventing mare instead:D

That’s awesome! I’ll say a prayer there’s a little embryo in there!

I remember going through all of that with mine…running to DFW airport to pickup “the sample” and meeting the vet on a Sunday because my mare was “ready” for the “sample” then:lol:. Then it was the ultrasound to confirm the bean was there and then the ones to confirm the bean was doing well…he was usually leaping around everywhere, so my vet decided then he was going to make a fine eventer.

Got my Pentosan from HorseMedsOnline today. From Australia to California - took 10 business days from when I ordered, to arrival.

That’s exactly where I order from… I’m lucky to have a vet who was willing to write a prescription for me.

Awesome!! So glad you got them as fast as I did!

Update on my mare…she has now had 3 of the 4 loading dose Pentosan injections and she is doing WONDERFULLY!!! Next to no stiffness, she is moving better than she has in years. She is so much more supple and loose in her dressage work. I’m so excited! We are planning for our first horse trial back at the end of August!

Ordered my pentosan again from horseprerace, much better experience this time, much happier with the packaging (although I suspect last time was fedex’s fault) got it on sale too!
We are almost three months post loading dose and I couldn’t be happier! Not only can I ride my horse again but she is in great shape and we are able to continue with our training.
I have given her a monthly dose after the loading, I suspect I could go more than a month between but don’t want to push it.
She is still stiff first thing in the morning (stalled overnight) but I only ride early mornings once in a while so no big deal.
All in all ecstatic with the results!

So excited about your results! Glad your mare is doing so well one it and you guys are starting back in training too. It’s giving me even more hope that it will continue to work for my mare too.

I read online that Dr. Faith Hughes of Peterson and Smith Equine Hospital did a study of Adequan vs. Pentosan and found that Pentosan was more effective! (Hurray since it’s cheaper too!!!)

That’s certainly good to know. I can definitely say it is working MUCH better for my mare than Legend did!

Do oral joint supplements help? I am skeptical that the horse can absorb the nutrients and benefit from them. I am interested in the Pentosan route, where can I buy it?

Either you need a prescription from your vet or you can get it from horseprerace.com without a prescription. I don’t really believe in oral supplements; I have never had much luck with them. I ordered Pentosan from horseprerace. It took 6 doses but it did seem to help him.

I’m with caryledee, the only oral joint supplements that has ever made any difference for my horses have been MSM and BL Solution (Devil’s Claw which is not legal for recognized shows), and these are both really anti-inflammatory supplements. I’ve tried MANY different joint supplements and none have seemed to make any significant difference.

I had very good luck with Adequan years ago with one of my horses. Then I had good luck with Legend for the first few years after my mare was diagnosed with arthritis. Over the past year or so, the effects of the Legend started to taper off to the point it was making no difference whatsoever (even after we injected her joint). So I decided to try Pentosan, and it has by far and away been the best injectable for my horse. However, it may not have the same effect on all horses and you do want to be aware of the side effects of the drug (bleeding risk).

The mare I’ve been riding was started on Pentosan two weeks ago and I can already tell a difference! She is 13 and green for her age but has had four babies. Idk if its her heat cycles getting less painful or the Pentosan, but had an awesome jump school yesterday with no rushing or over jumping fences.

My horse is participating in the Pentosan study with the Atlanta Equine Clinic. I think I posted this earlier. Basically, they were looking for horses that had previously been on Adequan. My mare is 19 years old and has been on Adequan for years (started with the loading dose and then I have done the monthly shots since). She was evented for years and raced as a youngster, so the poor thing probably has arthritis everywhere (I know she has a huge bone spur on her right hock). But she is sound, and likes to move, so she is in regular work–which seems to help her more than standing around.

Well, we are finished with the loading doses and are now onto every two week injections. I have to say, I can feel a significant difference in her suppleness and engagement behind. She has always been a big moving horse and pretty loose in her back. But when she is feeling creaky, she just wants to float around with no connection in front. She is now reaching down into the bit, stretching into my hands—that hasn’t happened in a long time. So, my experience so far (for my horse) is that the Pentosan is helping her more than Adequan.

Can you share how they’re evaluating the results?
