Pentosan, Legend or Adequan ???

There are a series of questions I need to answer when I am finished with the trial. So I would say it is primarily anecdotal. The results they will probably get out of are some statistics based on what the owners felt the response was when their horse was on Pentosan vs. Adequan.

For me, I had been reading about it and I really wanted to try it on my mare. However, my vet was not comfortable with it (because it’s made by a compounding pharmacy). But she did read the study and agree to prescribe it for this trial period.

Is there a placebo group in this study?

Don’t know. They do state that it is an informal study. Here is the link:

Am seeking a prescription for this right now. Came up with a plan over the winter for my OTTB, and Pentosan next on the list.

First was finally finding a good barn (on #3 after a year and a half), and he is in a training program ridden regularly by our dressage trainer and myself. Ultimate job unknown - I’m old H/J, last barn’s visiting trainer was eventing, but just want this guy to be able to do well in whatever looks right. Current trainer wonderful in identifying issues and knowing solutions.

This winter I searched just the COTH forums, and there was so much positive about Pentosan, thought I’d include it if it was apparent he needs more. When we moved to this new place, I had just started him on Cortaflx, but being a 10yo OTTB who had raced 4 years (and has taken some time for him to get in the right frame of mind - right barn helps!), I thought I may have to move up to the next step.

He is just now really learning to carry himself properly, we are getting him centered and away from bowing out to one side or the other. The Cortaflx is good, but he has an arthritic L ankle, and is “hocky” and can still take some time warming up to get comfortable and move well underneath himself. Also diagnosed with kissing spine, but hasn’t seemed to have an obvious back issue once we had the right saddle. Trainer agrees starting on Pentosan is a good next step.

Have never done injections of any kind. Left message for general vet for new barn and he hasn’t returned my call. Left barn that my favorite lameness vet visits, but have kept in touch with her. Called tonight and it’s been over a year since she’s seen him, so she can’t prescribe, but also wasn’t high on Pentosan , although with Adequan not being available, would have written the script. As I’d read here, thought the Pentosan would be a good first option since it doesn’t just address one area. Will try general vet again - at least Wedgewood has his name on file, so hoping he’s just busy. And trainer has another vet in mind just in case.

I just thought it would be easier calling to get this prescribed. Reading the posts on COTH isn’t exactly scientifically based, but I even created a chart of what seemed popular, and was sold on Pentosan being the next logical option.

Will add our 2 cents when we can get going!

OK, this is probably an odd question, but how is Pentosan shipped? Is it refrigerated (packed with ice) or shipped at temperature? I’m having a hard time getting it because NC won’t allow the major compounding companies, like Wedgewood to ship here, and I’m wondering if I can have it shipped to a friend in SC or GA and have them send it here. The cheapest price I can get it at is SO much more than what people have said they pay from WW…

It doesn’t need to be refrigerated.

Is anybody else slightly terrified that they are going to realize how awesome Pentosan is and jack the price up a zillion percent? Not very often that the product that works the best for me is also by far the least expensive!

OK, thanks. Could just have it shipped to a friend then.

Like pulling eyelashes, but finally trying to get local vet to order Pentosan. Didn’t return my call for a week. As said above, am at new barn. He’s a bit old-fashioned, when he returned my call and I began asking him about ordering it, he more or less took my head off trying to suggest I was up to something, and what did I know… :sigh: He didn’t remember seeing the horse when he came in last month, or at my friend’s barn when he boarded there for over a year 2 years ago. So now have to wait for him to show up at the barn. A bit concerned that he doesn’t know enough about it to prescribe it which may have been why he 1)didn’t return the call at first, and 2)was being ornery. We’ll see. Don’t understand what all the bruhaha is all about?

Anyway, my question is, I have my guy on Cortaflex - should I keep him on that while on the Pentosan? I’m guessing it wouldn’t hurt, but was just wondering if it was redundant.

Dying to get started already!

I HAVE looked for canine dosage, but not finding adequate info.
Want to try my old arthritic dog on it, and plan to speak to his vet soon, but want to be better armed with info, as most small animal vets seem to want to use the pain killers instead.

My dog vet said 3mg/kg. I guess the same as the horse dose.

You may not be a bleeder, but many of my patients very definitely are. Usually my doing–my job description could very easily be described as “battling blood clots”. And guess who are on the majority of blood thinners? The same demographic that has the majority of arthritis.

I have to very politely disagree with the “can’t hurt” premise. It is not possible to say that about ANY drug, most particularly one with heparin-like properties that is being given frequently by injection.

Sorry if that warrants a :sigh: and a  I use it, like it very well, but would never think of it as without risk. That’s NUTS, with all due respect to your vets.

Putting on my “devil’s advocate” hat as a USER AND FAN OF PENTOSAN:

I very definitely agree that in most cases benefit >>> risk. But to say this drug has no risks? I repeat: NUTS.[/QUOTE]

Deltawave - does this mean it would be contraindicated if using it for a horse with suspected ulcers? Gastrogard didn’t help last year. Constant good hay and pasture definitely improved things this year, but we’re now also awaiting an order of Succeed to see if it’s hindgut.

Good morning…help me (I am going to feed) and explain the issue with “compounded drugs” and why buying from Wedgewood with a script is better than buying from Horseprerace? I can get a vet to give me a script, but hate to waste their time if there is no difference. Thanks!

You should try to get the prescription for cost. From Wedgewood it works out to about $20 a dose and from Horseprerace it’s $40

Horseprerace now carries a 50ml bottle of the Pentason. That works out to be 8 shots and at $227 that is $28 a shot. Not much different from Wedgewood and the stuff from Horseprerace does work and is making a difference in my horse and few others I know.

I just got the 50 ml from Wedgewood for $119 (shipped) and that comes out to less than $15 a shot. So pretty significant difference to me!

Just checking back in to say that after almost 2 months, my results are, if not as dramatic as they have been for some, pretty positive. Horse is more flexible, working more fluidly through her back and her trot (which can be like a jackhammer) has definitely gotten easier to sit.

2 thumbs up

So the only difference from Wedgewood and Horseprerace is the price and the need for a script?

IMO, Wedgewood is a more reputable company and I would buy from them if you can get a scrip. I’m not sure how HPR is getting away with what they are doing.

What do you mean, carledee? Other places sell it without a script, too - just trying to figure out why one needs a script and others do not.
