Has anyone ever had your horse have a reaction to pentosan? I gave it to three horses on Wednesday and on Thursday one had a knot where I gave it and the other two had some very slight swelling. Today the horse with the knot no longer has the knot just swelling on that side of the neck and near the top of the neck. The other two have swelling a couple inches long with heat. None are running a fever all eating and drinking like normal. They act normal besides looking a little stiff and drained of energy.
I’ve had my gelding develop a small bump at the injection site once in a blue moon. Never any heat, and usually gone by the next day. What you’re describing might be worth a phone call to your vet to check.
I’ve called my vet and they told me its probably just a reaction or something viral and just to watch it and give banamine. I was just wondering if anyone else has had a reaction. I’ve been giving it since January every two weeks and this is the first time i’ve had a problem.
Do you buy your Pentosan directly from your vet, from a compounding pharmacy, or elsewhere? Depending on source, you might want to try contacting the manufacturer to see if anyone else has reported issues with reactions.
I buy it from my vet directly. I’ve used several doses out of this bottle and have never had an issue until now.
Multi-dose vials can get contaminated, so that’s one possibility
Years ago there was a problem with contamination at a compounding pharmacy and a friend’s horse got a shot of pentosan which ended up causing a major infection and large vet bills.
The fault was not of the pentosan but of the contamination at the pharmacy. (Pharmacy is no longer in business due to this issue)
