People Attempting to Undermine Safe Sport

It depends upon the State.

I think the fact that it’s medium security is of note. Probably will serve with a lot of people who went to federal prison for white collar crime with federal aspects… like tax evasion. I would guess the general population will be less violent and dangerous than it might be at a maximum security state penitentiary … where you will find murderers and violent rapists.

That’s just a hunch on my part.

It may also be that sex offenders are segregated from the general population in the Federal prison, thus being safer than being in the general population.

Yup.

Rich’s age might have been a factor as well… he’s in his 60’s. He’s not someone who has done multiple stints in jail before. Time in a max security state facility would have been pretty brutal on him. Not that I’m particularly sympathetic to him. But that’s the reality.

I think the Kehrings’ attorney’s comments were on point. There are many people who owe Maggie an apology.

I Hope Maggie is doing ok. I’d imagine this whole legal process has been stressful and emotionally exhausting for her.

There are special cell blocks at certain federal prisons that are used for sex offenders convicted of federal crimes. One of the Duggar sons is in federal prison in Texas, that particular prison has a section that’s almost all prisoners that are some type of sex offender.

Yes, that is my understanding and that is why I mentioned it in my prior post.

Generally federal facilities are nicer (better work/education programs, better physical plant, better access to other amenities, safer, etc.) and defendants prefer them and try to serve more time there.

I’m just glad this POS is doing time. That said, 4 years?!? (ETA: if I wasn’t clear, that’s a slap on the wrist.)

Further update.

Thank you for sharing.

I think this message is very powerful in that it is coming from a parent of a survivor. The tone is not one of blame… it’s about concrete steps people can take to prevent situations that predators can exploit.

Sadly, human predators will always exist. It’s a sad aspect of some human being’s personal nature. But we can all work together to help ensure that barns and shows do not continue to be an easy hunting ground for these predatory people.

Here are the details of Nasser’s stabbing. What a scumbag.

Convicted sex offender Larry Nassar was stabbed at federal prison in Florida after “making a lewd comment” while he and another inmate were watching a Wimbledon match, according to Michael R. Sisak and Michael Balsamo of the Associated Press.

Shane McMillan told employees of the prison he stabbed Nassar after the former sports doctor “made a comment about wanting to see girls playing in the Wimbledon women’s match,” according to an AP source.

Sisak and Balsamo reported that McMillan stabbed Nassar in the neck, chest and back. Correctional officers entered the cell and performed “life-saving measures” on him before he was transported to a nearby hospital. He remains in stable condition with a collapsed lung.

Absolutely. And, I think it’s important to remember that just because the abuser is brought the justice, does not bring healing to the victim. Just as you said, it can actually be very hurtful, as old wounds are opened up. I say this as a sexual abuse survivor - in the equine industry - myself.

Zero thoughts and prayers for him. Except an “amen.”

Thoughts and well-wishes for the COs who had to deal with the aftermath of a prison shanking.

I watched with horror as adults in dressage defended a CURRENT team member who is under criminal investigation for drugging and raping a teenager. His parents are bigwigs in the sport, and they moved out of jurisdiction, then continued competing for the US. I want to gag every time I see a USDF post praising the son’s accomplishments.

Has this not been resolved yet? It seemed like an egregious case, also one of those that people who rode at that place during that time were not surprised about.

I can’t find any update since that article.

Canadian Francis Berger has been charged with crimes against four additional victims, one of whom is a minor. That brings the total to at least six victims. Sorry, the news articles I’ve seen so far were only in French. Seems like the police asking for more victims to come forward worked, though.

The acts were apparently committed between 1997 and 2020 in Quebec and Florida.

Apparently he’s been allowed to remain out on $15 000 bail, and he remains banned from competition sites by Equestrian Canada.
