People driving past your property - very slowly......

Maybe it’s paranoia, but what are ya’ll thoughts on people driving past your property very slowly, sometimes stopping appearing to take pictures? Are they looking at the pretty horses in the pasture or something more sinister

My property is fairly new to the area (built on lot) 1yr+ old and the horses only recently got home. Nothing monumental going on here - just a pasture and a small 4 stall barn and house - set pretty far off the road. I can see people driving by from the house but they can’t see me. Haven’t noticed repeat vehicles, very familiar with neighborhood cars. I do have a camera on the barn, trespassing signs posted, security system, etc. but I still get creeped out. Low crime area. All neighbors have visible (from the road) livestock as well. Thoughts? Any other precautions to take?

Now I want to see pictures. Do you have really pretty horses? Nice scenery? Do you have a sign people might be reading?

Or do you have a Pokemon?

Most of the time it is harmless. We have silly goats and a gelding who likes to do mildly raunchy things with saplings near the road, so usually all is forgiven.

However, we are in an area where it is legitimate to assume they are ‘casing’ us. I make mental notes of those cars. Sometimes they go by incredibly slowly while I’m working. I stop what I’m doing and stare back. They speed off. It’s fun.

Eye contact is a great deterrent. So are dogs and a driveway gate. We target practice at the back of the property once in a while. I get the feeling we are the ‘crazy’ people in the area and that’s fine.
Be aware of it, but don’t worry too much.

You either have a very pretty property or, as Microbovine said, you have pokemon.

Seriously. If this trend just started in the past three or so weeks… there’s pokemon on your property.

I mean of course I am biased and think my horses are the most beautiful in the world! Not much scenery other than literally one big pasture divided into three paddocks - no trees, no water feature or abstract art installation  And I can’t even comprehend what the Pokemon thing is so I hope he is not hiding out in my yard

Blame Pokémon

People slow down past my place all the time. Every Sunday afternoon in the summer. I live on the southbound lanes of a major highway on the cottage country route

Yep, Sunday drivers out for a look at the country. I wouldn’t assume anything more sinister yet.

Get added signs with “video surveillance” or the old “smile, you are on camera”.

If you are with a security company, they should have given you their company’s signs to put up, like we have here.
I think those make some wannabe criminals move on to the next seemingly less protected house.

We have people slow down to watch the horses play or just watch them graze, happens a lot more since our colt came along this spring. We’ve had people pull in the driveway to tell us how pretty they are–it’s been great getting to know some of the people that live around us, and has helped when we’ve had a stray dog show up, random cat, etc.

A couple weeks ago a lady stopped in the middle of the rode and was yelling out the car window–we thought our dog was on the road and she was yelling at us. I started walking over to her, and heard her better, she was yelling, “Horses! Run across the field horses! Horses run!”, I got close enough she noticed me and peeled out, tires squealing. Of course, the horses just stood blinking at her…

If I notice someone driving by really slowly I usually ask them if I can help. Sometimes they’re lost, I had one couple who were birdwatchers, another who was surveying for a new fiber optic cable.

I am guilty of driving slowly past horse properties… I like to look. Nothing nefarious, no Pokemon involved… I just love checking out properties. I never pull into a driveway or anything - I just cruise on by!

Around here we assume they are taking a look, either to buy real estate, or to scope out the neighbourhood.

I’ll admit to it - I slowly drive pass country homes to check it out.

Funny story about taking pictures tho - the women who bought my old pony came across a picture of her property (and my ex-pony actually) in a farming magazine.

I’ve done that–well maybe not taking pictures (yet) but drive by very slow. I am admiring the lovely landscaping.

I am also a creeper!

I don’t have a little farmette yet, so I love admiring what people have done, take mental notes, and just enjoy the scenery.

I get this, too, they are often looking across at the elk herd on the far hill, or trying to avoid hitting some wildlife in the road.

Or watching us eating dinner on the front porch…

I’d rather they did this than speed past in a cloud of dust

I find nudity encourages them to move along. JK
