Perigueux - thoughts? Opinions?

Just curious what the consensus (if there is one) might be on his offspring…

TIA.

I looked at breeding to him very seriously in 2008 (I think, or '09) and very much liked his jump and breeding. But ended up breeding to For Play by For Pleasure and liked the resulting filly (now sold) so much that her dam is now in foal to For Play again. I did a lot of research on Perigueux and liked what I found but I think I came to the conclusion that, with this particular mare, the result of the breeding might be a bit hot.

I wanted to end my breeding adventures with a Perigueux foal, but the mare did not take this summer. It may not be Perigueux’s fault. The mare had a hard time bouncing back from a late-term abortion and perhaps one last foal from her before I hung up my foal halter wasn’t in the cards. Fate is frequently smarter than I am.

WHen I inquired to a German contact the response was that the breeders like him because he make pretty foals, but the jumper contingient wasn’t yet convinced.

I didn’t care, as I was breeding for an all-rounder and the mare threw a good mind even when bred to a firebreathing dragon.

FWIW.

I had a Perigueux colt this year out of a Zangersheide mare. The mare is old fashioned, a bit big boned, throws an incredible mind, but really needs to be refined and have blood added. The colt is nice and refined, and has an incredible mind. He’s very laid back, super sweet, but with a nice amount of spunk.

I bred to him based on his bloodlines, a few jumping pictures, and a conformation shot. This was before there was any video of him or his offspring. But he was exactly what I wanted and I couldn’t be happier with my foal. He normally has some offspring going through the Hanoverian auctions and I am sure you could search through and find some videos. They are very impressive.

I will be rebreeding to him in a couple years and hoping for a filly. This mare just needs to carry my show mare’s foal first. If you want any more info feel free to pm me

ETA: My vet told us it was the highest quality frozen semen he has ever seen, mare caught first time easy.

Just bumping this back up to say Thank You! to those who have replied so far!

Interesting on the possible addition of ‘heat’…hmmm.
KaChing - if you wouldn’t mind sharing some photos, I’d love to see your youngster! And thank you for the info on the semen post thaw quality!

If anyone has more info to add - love to hear it!

Thanks again!

o.k. I am not that jumper interested as a lot of you know. I was at a foal show in my area in 2007. I saw some really nice foals, pretty, nice enough swing in trot, good walk and they seemed to be interested in their environment, but not hot. I looked them up in the program and one after the other of this type was by Perigueux. Because of that I tried to look out for the stallion. I remember that I runned al over the showground at a shwo because he was anounced in the jumping test and I wanted to see him. I even took pictures. I really liked what I saw, even though this stallion had a small problem. I am very sorry to say, but his problem was his rider. A rider I have seen on one or the other Celle stallion and I still do not like what I see. Anyways. Perigueux himself is now shown under Eva Bitter (since 2010). She placed 3rd in the German championships of jumping (ladies) this year and has won S***. I am sure we will see him next year in some bigger events !
And it is true - if you ask one of those true jumper people that say that they do not see international potential. I need to ask a friend of mine who is much more into jumper breeding how the feelings towards him are in generell.
As said his oldest offspring is from 2007. 46 registered with the FN and 18 out of those placed in 2011 winning about 2000 (the classes they compete in will give you 30-40€ per win - so figure…).

3 licensed sons - two out of these in Verden

He certainly is interesting but I don’t like the way he handles his hindlegs over the jump. The are nearly crossing which is something that will bother a lot of buyers and I too prefer a more let’s say parallel manner. It’s a bit like with E.G. and T. in the dressage world: The rider doesn’t come with your dose of semen, what you get is just the genetics

The Perpignon offspring I’ve personally met and sat on were far from being something I would want to breed to. Sorry to say it but I don’t believe in Perigeux as a sire. I do believe in him a lot as a sporthorse though and he most definitely seems to gel with E.M.B. superbo and I wish them all the best.

I guess I should have mentioned that if I were to breed to him, it would be for an outcross of some new blood with a bit of our ‘standard’ linebreeding (Absatz, Waidmannsdank, Duellant, Goldfisch II back aways on both sides) and not killing the jump that we already have in the program…not to breed for an international GP jumper. Adding type & having a pretty face is always a bonus as well!

Interesting to get your perspective as a rider Kareen - if you don’t mind sharing (via PM is fine) what you didn’t like about the offspring - I’m all ears.

Thanks!
