Permanent FAKE tails?

Thought I would ask the tail masters about tail.

My dressage pony has a rat tail.
I have a fake tail that I braid in for shows. It looks good. I’m a braider so I was able to get’er’done.

But no lie, it gives me anxiety at shows.
And then at home she goes right back to rat tail. I’m vain. It’s ugly.

20 years ago, my Aunt had a Reiner with a poor tail. She hired someone to come out and knot single strands of hair to the horse’s natural hairs. Took about 2 days and cost 1K.

I haven’t found anyone who does this. So I’m thinking about doing it on my own…
I figure I can use a Fisherman’s or Surgeon’s loop knot to tie in the hairs.
And then maybe do the lower pirtions with the Brazillion Knot technique (it’s a human hair extension technique).

The knotted in pieces are, in theory, permanent…until they break or fall out. And the Vrazillion would gave to be taken out and redone every 2 months or so.

Does this sound totally nuts?
If I start now, I can gave it done by Feb. Horse is at home, so I can do a little at a time.

I know of someone who hot glued hair onto their horses tail hairs and it seemed to work for a while.

The traditional tail extension just didn’t look great on this mare so they hot glued about 10-15 strands of loose hair to about 10-15 strands of attached hair and it looked great. You couldn’t tell unless you were right up close.

I think you should try your idea —if it doesn’t work out, you are in no worse position than you were before. My DD has hair extensions and has kept them in forever —don’t think it hurt her hair.

It can be done but only lasts for a short period of time. It won’t last the entire show season. My old trainer used to be flown all over the country to put them in before fake tie in tails were legal. She still does I believe Morgan’s (or another breed where tie in tails are illegal). But the tie in tails do less damage and money wise are much cheaper than the extensions

I wonder if you couldn’t do it with the little beads they use in some human hair extensions…Back when hair feathers were a thing I was using those beads to put them on everyone (including my dog) and they were cheap, very easy to work with, and the only maintenance would be moving the beads and hair up occasionally as the tail grows out.

Back in the day… I had this done. It was two strands attached to one strand of her natural tail. The weight of the two strands pulled out a lot of her own tail and I was worse off than when I started. Upkeep was a pain because you had to hand pick through the tail so that you did’t catch on the knots. We used surgical knots, some use that heat fusible glue for human hair extensions. I don’t recommend it based on my personal experience.
