i’m considering getting one of those lunging systems, pessoa or other brands ,like waldhausen for example.it looks like i’ll be riding less this season but would like to keep my horse in shape and both of us motivated to do some work .but are they really as effective as they claim to be ? or will lunging with ( or without )good old side reins do the trick ?also, are they safe to use in case something happens ,like the horse spooks and tries to take off ?
any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated !
Personally I don’t like the physics of them. The hind end is used to bang into the mouth which makes the horse drop down and behind to protect themselves.
I just don’t know why they are so popular to be honest.
The only lunging rigs I like are the de gogue, Vienna reins, and side reins. Side reins for more advanced horses. The de gogue I use with long lines / double lunge lines. The Vienna reins I use when single line lunging young horses.
There’s a recent thread on here about Equibands. I’d look into buying or making one of those personally. I think they are superior to Pessoa rig as they don’t involve the mouth. The Pessoa just looks like a wreck waiting to happen to me.
Really dont like the Pessoa, I also dont like how it work, and I find too many people are using it and not knowing how to use it or how it works on the horse. I do use side reins and Vienna reins, and I was thinking to buy the equibands but I didn’t really want to pay the $200 some to see if I liked it. Got these ones instead as I have their side reins and really like them. Haven’t used them yet due to the lock down.

I have really enjoyed the equicore. Worth every penny so far, particularly when you can use it both under tack and lunging. Sitting in the horse, you can really feel how it encourages the horse to step under and round up.
Also nice to have less stuff to care for. I prefer not to have separate lunging and riding stuff.
We use the authentic Pessoa. It works when used right. The alternatives that we have tried are not the same.
Another here who does not like the pessoa system. Side reins can be used on any level horse , but should not be used to pull a horses head in and should not be used by someone who has not been taught to use them correctly.
It is not side reins that kill and maim horses. It is people using side reins incorrectly who kill and maim horses.
thank you all ! i think i’ll stick to traditional lunging
