Pet insurance ... recommendations? best site for comparing different companies?

I just registered my mixed-breed dog with AKC so we can eventually compete in AKC agility trials, and I signed up for their free 30 days pet insurance. Given the thousands of dollars in vet bills we’ve incurred this year, I’m thinking insurance would a good idea going forward (wish I had it a couple of months ago!!).

Awhile ago, I came across a site that I thought was linked from this board that gave a really good rundown on different pet insurance companies/plans. I can’t find it anymore.

I’ve searched in this forum and found some folks happy with Healthy Paws and read some good reviews about them as well as Petplan.

So … recommendations? experiences?

Healthy Paws - both of my rescues are insured through them. I pay about $61/month for both. I have 90% coverage on just about everything (except routine stuff which I believe no insurance covers) and a $500 deductible (for each). Thankfully I’ve only had to submit two small claims but they were very quick in handling everything.

I use Embrace

I use Healthy Paws. One of the main selling points was that the deductible is per YEAR rather than per incident.

That said, as with any pet insurance, ANYTHING that occurred prior to getting the insurance plan is now a prior condition and, more than likely, will be denied.

They will not cover the exam fee for anything, but all diagnostics and treatments will be covered as long as there is nothing in the pet’s prior medical record that indicates they’ve been treated for the same thing prior to getting the plan.

We really like Trupanion. It covers bilateral conditions- some insurances will not cover a right TPOL if you have the left done. It also has has a complimentary care rider which is fantastic.

I have the same plan for my two and I’ve been thrilled. My luck ran out this year: one dog poisoned herself on a hike and the other was just diagnosed with an iliopsis strain. Healthy Paws was a pleasure to work with, fast, and responsive. Not having to stress about the finances or restrict the second dog’s PT is worth every penny I’ve paid in premiums.

The ones mentioned are also the ones highly rated on the sites I’ve found. Sounds like I can’t go far wrong with several of them.

Most of our vet clinic clients use Embrace.

We just had a 5 K claim that came back from pet plan to the penny what I expected.

I like it because you can choose deductible/copay. So our older cat gets 500 deductible/80 percent. Young one is 100/90 percent. Both bills are same.

Been very happy with them/their app/responsiveness.

I was perusing the Progressive site the other day, to make a car insurance change.
Apparently, they are also providing pet insurance through a company called Pet’s Best. I had not heard of this before, and was pretty new to the idea of small animal insurance.
Sounds like its a growing industry.
Will have to compare now that you’ve recommended some others!

I have Pet’s Best on my dogs because I like the plan structure (I have a high deductible because I want for major injuries/sickness only), they cover intact dogs (I show and breed), and they cover working dogs (I have a search and rescue dog so really want her covered in case she is hurt working). Knock on wood I have not had to use it.
