Pet Insurance Recommendations

With a new puppy coming home in a few weeks, I’m looking to get my ducks in a row and would like to get some opinions on pet insurance. I currently have pets best and I HATE it. I have to fight for every reimbursement and it’s been nothing but frustrating. I’m just waiting for my coverage year to end so I can cut ties all together. Does anyone have pet insurance from a company they really love. We had VPI years ago and they were good, but they are more expensive than other’s I’ve checked out.

I use Embrace…costs me $41/month for my two Dobes. I’ve never had to make a claim thankfully. The breeder of my dogs has Embrace also and made a claim for a puncture wound that turned ugly. She had all kinds of vet bills and ended up with acupuncture and other alternative treatments that Embrace covered with no problems. She was extremely impressed with them.

I like Embrace too, I’ve used them in the past. Maybe also look into a veterinary discount program - I use Pet Assure. Just make sure your vet is in their network. I used to have that along with pet insurance; you can do both.

I have Trupanion. I originally bought it because it had excellent reviews, because they cover 90% of actual costs, and because the rate for insurance stay at the rate at which you first insure your dog (i.e., I insured one dog at 10 months, he will always have the 10 month rate rather than the rate escalating every year). They also do not exclude conditions known to occur in higher rates in certain breeds.

Good for me, because my Standard Poodle was diagnosed recently with Addison’s disease. They covered 90% of diagnosis, and they are covering 90% of all treatment FOREVER. This disease can run $150-250 a month to treat, so this is huge! They will not ever exclude the condition so long as I make my monthly payments. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Unlike horse insurance, they will not exclude it at the next annual renewal.

Are you paying $41/month for both Dobes together? I think I’m paying more than that for my one Dobe…I’m wondering what I’m doing wrong. He’s young and has only had one minor claim for I don’t even remember what.

BTW, I pay about $73 per month for my two Standard Poodles, $250 deductible per health issue (i.e., I paid the $250 for the Addison’s, now it is all covered). Did I say before how much I LOVE Trupanion.

Yes the $41/month Embrace policy covers BOTH Dobes. You can pick and choose you coverage and deductable amounts. The cover a LOT of things that most others don’t.

Trupanion is not available in all states…fyi.

Look at this site too. I noticed that Trupanion doesn’t score as high as some others, but be sure to check escalating rates over time, that was a huge issue for me, and not something that many people would catch until they had to renew for an older dog:

I got Petplan. I liked that they offer life-long coverage for all hereditary, congenital, and chronic conditions. You can select different plans depending on how much deductible you want to pay ($50, $100, $200), what annual coverage amount you want ($8k, $12k, $20k), and what reimbursement percentage you want (80%, 90%, 100%).

Thanks! I am going to call them to see about lowering my costs.
