Petsmart deshedding grooming

Has anyone had their dogs groomed and had the deshedding treatment done at Petsmart? Im trying to decide if its worth the extra $22 they charge? Thanks!

Are you talking about getting undercoat or something different?

Me personally? I groom my own dog. After seeing several different groomers in action when working at a veterinary hospital, plus seeing the grooming at PetSmart when I was working there for a time, I just don’t trust anyone to groom my dog. That is not to say that there aren’t really GREAT groomers out there–I know there are–but I just prefer to do it myself.

Good luck!

Not worth it, IMO. I get more deshedding done in 5 minutes every other day for a week with a furminator.

typical de-shed grooms (PetsMart, PetCo, private salon, mobile, whoever) will include a warm bath to help loosen up the coat, a vigorous brushout while the dog is wet and lathered up, a deep conditioning, and a good session with a high-velocity dryer plus plenty of elbow grease. Getting the bulk of the coat out in the tub helps cut down the mess, reduces uncomfortable tugging on the coat, and helps protect the remaining coat from breakage. The HV blow-dry is key, and a professional model has enough “oomph” to do most of the work for you.
I’m not a fan of Furminator. It does too much damage to the coat for my liking, and there’s enough risk of balding and skin irritation that I don’t recommend it for general use. Used judiciously and gently, it does its job. I prefer Zoom Groom rubber curry brushes, undercoat rakes, and wooden-pin brushes myself.
The value is something only you can determine. If you’d be willing to pay someone $22 to clean your bathroom after bathing the dog, then I’d say it’s worth it.
There are lots of kind and talented groomers working for corporate salons, and lots of unethical creeps in small business. I don’t care who signs the checks, I want to know who’s got their hands on the pet.

Amen sista! The mess after bathing, drying, shaving, and rinsing a large SP is HUGE. If my husband isn’t around to help, it can lead to HOURS of cleanup as things get tracked not only through the bathroom but the whole house!

I would totally love to have someone do this for us, I’m just too nervous at this point. The only wonderful groomer I’ve got in mind is an hour away and I can’t swing that with my work schedule so we just buck up and do it ourselves every two weeks.

Just picked Vito up for Petsmart, I’m happy so far. We’ll see if my couch is less covered in hair in the next few days. With two GSDs, I would definitely pay $22 for someone to clean my bathroom!

I pay $8 at a “self serve” dog wash place. They provide shampoo, a HV dryer, AND I get to leave the mess behind for them to clean up.

I highly recommend that route for anyone concerned about the bad things that can happen with groomers… or for the penny pinchers (I’m both ;)).

If your dog is short haired, a Furminator is a worthwhile investment, IMO. If you’re showing or something, hair breakage might be a concern. But I warrant more pet owners complain about shedding than their pet’s split ends…

I groom at a PetSmart. The shedding treatment works best if you do it on a regular basis. Hair grows on a roughly 6wk cycle so if you’re doing it only once every few months, If your dog is a heavy shedder, you may see increased shedding the first time or two that you do it until you can get ahead of the shedding.

I had a Border collie and the first couple times I did it to him, the shedding actually got a little worse. However, once I got ahead of the shedding, it was easy to keep up with it. I did it once a month and there really wasn’t much shedding in my apartment in between. Month 3 is where I really started to see maximum benefits.

IME, pet owners rarely care about hair breakage/split ends (there’s typically not enough of it to notice…) as much as they care about shedding in their house.

I am glad to hear this…so many people that had Corgis had raved about the Furminator so I thought my traditional rubber curry mitt and wet brushing was too old school and I was missing something. But the Furminator, while it did get out bags of hair, was really hard on my corgis coat. My Vizsla loved it though! (why I don’t know)

Now I stick to well timed baths and lots of wet/damp brushing to get out her undercoat – this year she looks great. She does however, shed a lot for the week after…all those loose undercoat tufts come out all over. I would definitely pay someone $22 to do it (or better yet $8 self serve) and the good thing at PetSmart is they are visible the whole time (at least at mine).

Definitely agree with the self service places. Our dog was too neurotic to be left at a groomers or petsmart or wherever - there’s no way that would’ve worked unless we could have found someone who would come to us. We took him to self service places and my mum loved not having to deal with the mess after at home!

$10 at a do-it-yourself grooming place complete with high powered blower, and we deshed before heading there.

Much better than leaving the big guy at a groomer’s for 10+ hours.
