Ph 7.2 Calcium 500 Watch her????RIP Sweet Mare

Have mare in for foaling, older experienced broodmare. Was at 340 days on March 22. Has a decent size bag but milk not testing anything for past week. Today she tested Ph between 7.2 & 6.8 but her calcium was 500. If I only relied on sight and taste I’d be thinking not tonight, still a little yellow and salty. never had one test so high in calcium without ph being closer to 6.2. Any thoughts?? She’s #5 of about 26 for us this year:eek:

She went from nothing to 500? That is a huge jump if so so that alone is reason to watch her. If not for the huge jump I would say check again in the morning.

Well she was quiet all night. It was the 6.8/250 maiden who decided to foal standing up at 2:10 this morning.

Ha - gotta love the maidens!

Mare finally foaled at 2:10 this morning. All was well until about noon when she started showing signs of colic. Vet was there already so we immediately began treating her. Gave her a few hours but as soon as meds wore off she was painful again. Post foaling displaced large colon. Grim reminder of how sucky this business can be.

I’m so sorry.

aw shoot…hugs

Oh my word… So sorry.

Oh no, I am so sorry. How is the foal?

So sorry. The celebration of a new life can go south so quickly. Is the foal doing alright?? RIP good mare…Good Luck baby.

Foal seems to be doing ok. Hindsight is 20/20. When this mare came to us 2 weeks ago she was “loosing her mucous plug” which continued over 10 days with nasty looking discharge. Vet also said “loosing mucous plug” . She was guarded and hard to catch, wouldn’t run away from you but stayed juuust out of arms reach and would never look at you. We were able to befriend her and love on her which she really seemed to enjoy. She did seem a little dull though and developed alot of ventral edema. Her early labor lasted longer than we usually like to see but she didn’t seem to “clean out” during that time and never once went down until just after her water broke and stayed down until she delivered. Passed placenta in good time. Colt was strong and stood quickly but didn’t show much interest in nursing. We finally gave him 2 bottles of her colostrum then let him get hungry and he seemed fine. We took him to a friends farm who is better equipped to deal with orphan foals. I rode in the trailer with him and by the time we got there he had bonded with me and followed me off the trailer and into the stall. Melted my heart. We always get a couple of mares each year that hold a special place in my heart and she was one of them. Sucks.
