Picking up stirrup with thigh blocks

I am new to thigh blocks, and love them, but finding picking up my stirrups challenging. I have ridden with fillis and composite stirrups. The composites are super light and have better grip of the sole of the boot, so I prefer them, but block gets in the way of picking up either type. Fortunately my horse is a saint and tolerates my flailing around.

Does anyone use the stirrups that are jointed to allow turning them perpendicular to the leather?

TIA for any suggestions.

I just grab the leather under my thigh and give it a bit of a twist to re-orient the off side stirrup to make picking it up easier. I’m assuming yor are talking about mounting, and not losing a stirrup while riding, though.

Yes, mounting only.

I do the same, I just twist it with my hand when I go to get on.

Also get in the habit of moving your leg back instead of forward to adjust the stirrups - it’s not the “pony club approved” way but its often the way you have to when riding in dressage saddles.
