Ponies, man. Put on this earth to build character in children and patience in adults.
My pony will not eat anything with Prascend in it. Not feed, not a carrier. He figures it out fast. The solution - I dissolve the tablet in a little bit of hot water and add some molasses and syringe it in his mouth. As long as he doesn’t have hay or grass in his mouth so he can spit it out, down it goes. And I don’t even have to put a halter on him. He did not test for IR but I am triaging things - he has to have the Prascend before I worry about other things. And it is not a lot of molasses. Easy for me to do first thing in the AM.
Just thought I’d update here. Maybe this will help anyone struggling.
My mini will NOT eat his zyrtec in the afternoon no matter what I do. It appears has caused some issues with the prascend. Who new? While I’d prefer he get it twice a day, we’re sticking with once daily for now… I’ll revisit later if necessary.
We started with the fig newton. It worked and then he started refusing once he tasted the zyrtec. My thoroughbred now gets his meds in the fig newtons (he’s a fan and doesn’t care at all that drugs are inside – he also loves his pills in oatmeal cream pies – he ate 20 minocycline 2x/day in oatmeal cream pies for 30 days – great pill pockets if sugar isn’t an issue).
Then I tried a piece of a dimple treat. It worked for a bit and then he said no. He gets a 1/2 a prascend so I’m not entirely sure if he was tasting it or what. I also tried the hollowing out a piece of carrot and it worked, but he wasn’t thrilled with it. Carrots are only good if he can take a bite.
Currently? He’s getting a half of a nilla wafer broken in half, with the prascend and a dab of sugar free pancake syrup. I make a sandwich cookie and he is very obsessed. I’m not sure if he likes the cookie or the syrup more. But the syrup definitely takes any of the pill flavor away. I figure I can always use a whole cookie if necessary (they are barely larger than a quarter) but so far the 1/2 cookie seems to work.
This!, I have an anorexic pracend horse in my barn. I dissolve his Vit e, equiox and pracend in 10 ccs of water and done! I know he gets it all even if he doesn’t eat his grain.
