Pilot Hills, Ca

Can anyone tell me about living there with horses? My husband is inheriting a small farm there and we are not familiar with the area.

Do you mean Pilot Hill? It’s close to a bunch of trails including the Western States. Lots of horses and horse people there. Drawback is if you need to commute daily to a metropolitan area the roads are very curvy and it takes awhile particularly if there are accidents.

If it’s Pilot Hill it’s a quaint touristy very little old town, 1849, in the Sierra Nevada foothills maybe…I dunno, 60 miles east of Sacramento and 90/100 miles (over the Sierra by Lake Tahoe via Donner Pass) west of Reno. It’s well off the interstate IIRC. Gold Rush country with related themed tourist activities and some wine places. Trendy hotels in restored old buildings. Year round population under 1k ( googled that), been there, it’s cute, long drive to get to any sizable city, most horse places looked seasonal or casual trail riding horses in the backyard.

Climates nice, not too high so not much snow, hot summer, grass spotty or dry, fires a bit of a concern with those twisty little roads. Folks we visited there worked in Sacramento and that was 10 years ago, probably growing as a bedroom community. Land might have a decent value if you don’t want to live that rural year round.

Yes, My FIL completed Tevis back in the 90’s. I like to trail ride but am really into dressage. Are there boarding barns in the area? We are hoping to sell our present farm and was planning to relocate to NC. We really don’t want to keep horses at home anymore, because we we want to travel. Now this opportunity fell into our lap.

There are dressage barns in the greater Auburn including Loomis, Penryn, and Newcastle - Black Label Farms in Newcastle comes to mind: https://www.facebook.com/Blacklabelfarms/. These barns are 45 minutes or so west of Pilot Hill. Pilot Hill is a smidgeon of a town near Cool where the nearest grocery store is located. Cool Hills Ranch is under new ownership but it’s pretty western oriented. There may be some new barns in Pilot Hill or Cool that I’m not aware of - crawl around on this website for info from those in the know: https://www.foothillscds.org/
