Reviewing my pics for listings this weekend, I saw one of our horses has been fired on the HOCKS. I’ve never seen such a thing, and didn’t even notice when I looked the horse over–pretty much only visible if you’re standing directly behind the horse. I’ll link the pic once I’ve got it up on the site, but any thoughts? Is this commonly done and I’ve just never seen it until now?

It was done on a gelding I got off the track. Don’t know the history, but that hock has never been a problem.
It isn’t as common as shins, but you do see it sometimes, either along the inside of the hock or at the back.
I recently saw a horse with the grossest scarred-up firing marks around both fronts, all the way around the leg from the hoof to the knee >:-(
I believe it’s done for curbs. My mare has freeze-firing on her hocks. And so does Cigar (if I recall correctly :))
You see it a lot more on Standardbreds than Thoroughbreds, only because you deal with more hind end injuries in harness racing than in flat racing.
Interesting! Learn something new every day
Here are the promised pics: http://www.canterusa.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=8456:sure-as-gold&catid=279:colorado-trainer-listings&Itemid=397
The fire marks are only on the back of each hock.
I had one with freeze fired hocks. He had old curbs. Never had an issue.
Did you HAVE to post a chestnut mare under 16hh?
Le sigh
Oh, rb, this mare is just So. Lovely. She is just easy and sweet and kind. She’s also super classy–KY bred. Just doesn’t want to play the game anymore, but has run well in the past and has made some money.
You should buy her. She is so nice.
Has Amy seen her @ the track?
No, this trainer doesn’t use Amy, I don’t think. But you could have her take a look
Hehe! The timing couldn’t be worse! I have a colicky one month old two legged baby, and no, you can’t give them banamine! I asked when the vet was out to tap DD’s pony’s hocks
JK, I know you can’t give a baby horse drugs!
Yup, Cigar had one.
