PINE SHAVING HELP!!

okay my normal place to get pine shavings by the ton. $25 a ton. Long story short they are moving locations and they ran out of bedding till the move. I cant wait.

I found another place that does $6 a yard. Can someone help me with the math here?

How much weight is 1 yard of dried pine shavings? is this a better buy? or is about the same?

Can the company you are doing business with not tell you?

Otherwise I would order and spend what you normally would and see how much you get. Anything is better than bagged shavings and since you need it now you are kind of stuck.

You can’t do the math if you don’t know the moisture content and size of the shavings, both of which hugely impact the weight of a “yard”. Buy what you can, to last as long as you need it to.

1 cubic yard is 27 square feet if you bed at 1". Bedding at 4" would mean a bit less than 7 square feet. 6" would be 4.5 square feet. That has nothing to do with weight so you can’t compare that way.

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet so would cover 27 square feet at 1 foot (not 1") depth. Bedding 4" (=1/3 foot) deep would cover 3x as much area or 81sf; at 6" it would cover 54sf.

You are right!! My apologies! i was doing the math where “1” was 1", not 1’. Yikes.
