Pinehurst,NC Feedstores & Hay

Friend relocated & needs COTH help in locating sources for feed & hay.
She feeds orchard grass & has purchased round bales, but would like small squares as well as she does not have the eqpt to handle these on a regular basis. Seller did not have these available.

She also feeds a hodgepodge of commercial pelleted feeds & supplements.
So far she has not found any feedstores besides TSC & one she describes as “high end”.
If it helps, her farm is located near Antares Dressage.
I suggested introducing herself there & asking for suppliers & that may be a future option, but for now she is still making weekend trips back here (NW IN) to move stuff from storage.

What say COTH N Carolinians?

Has she found Moore Equine Feed and Pet Supply (Southern Pines)? They have a pretty good selection of feeds from Seminole, Crypto-Aero to Purina, Blue Seal and Triple Crown. The website says they have hay as well.

I doubt they would deliver that far but Pittsboro Feed in Pittsboro is an excellent feed store. Very knowledgeable staff and excellent customer service. She may need to go pick up her feed, but lunch in little downtown PBO is pretty good too!

Thanks @Displaced Yankee
I will pass the info along

Moore equine is probably the one she was speaking about. While they have some high end apparel, the feed and hay is reasonably priced. There is also a southern states by Carthage, and Aberdeen supply Co in Aberdeen, about 10 min away.
I had a hay supplier down there who was very reasonable for the area (I believe 8$ a bale) with a O/T mix. All orchard, Timothy, alfalfa is shipped in because it doesn’t grow down there. Round bales that aren’t coastal (not suitable for most horses) are almost impossible to find because they don’t ship as well as square bales. It also is a bit more rare to find hay that isn’t a mix unless its alfalfa.
It is possible to drive up to western Virginia and buy hay directly from the supplier. It’s about a 4-5 hour drive.

Thanks @StormyDay I’ll share that info

IIRC, friend got Bermuda Grass in the round bales.
Her WBX showed signs of impaction the other night (vet tubed) & Google suggests this is not uncommon with Bermuda.
Wish friend had done some homework before moving horses onto new grass, but I’ll do what I can to help from afar.

There are fescue round bales that can be found about 1-2 hours north-ish in the Triad and Triangle areas. But they are of varying qualities. Cana Land farm might deliver that far. Isley’s in Burlington might also an option–they have gorgeous hay at very fair prices. Allie Conrad is the admin of a local hay sourcing FB page–can’t remember her COTH name, but someone else can likely chime in. https://www.facebook.com/groups/818631114824776/ I’d definitely give that group a try. I’m also in the Bermuda is a no-go group, but clearly it works for many folks.

Yeah, Bermuda, coastal, local, it’s called a lot of things but it all is IMO not suitable for horses.
I heard someone was trying to grow alfalfa down there. I don’t know how it went though.
i did manage to grow orchard in my pasture, but it never took off enough for cutting.
