My vet recommended I give the PP skin & allergy a try for my itchy mare …PP recommends feeding their base wellness equine formula in addition to the skin & allergy supplement for maximum effect …my question is will the PP “base” throw off her diet beings that it’s vitamins/minerals/amino acids etc ?? She eats a ration balancer (Buckeye Gro N Win)

The GNW is balanced in and of itself. It’s also a tiny portion of the diet - forage makes up the majority.

PP is already a pretty poor v/m supplement, unbalanced on its own. But of course PP would recommend it

It brings 300mg Fe, 14mg Cu, and 120mg Zn. That’s a 21:1:2.5 ratio, which is terribly high in iron.

It brings tiny amounts of amino acids, but that’s not going to hurt anything either.

End result - it is not a product I’d use, let alone add. And the pitiful 850mg glucosamine, compared to the 10,000mg needed for best results, is a waste.

JB …I’m wondering is there skin & allergy formula worth the money then as well??

I over-grew a filly with PP. She developed OCD at about 5 mos i eventually at 9mos took her to MIZZOU to have a surgical procedure done (scraped the dimpled cartilage) . She is 20 now, has arthritis there. But prior to her older age, she was always hard to trim that hoof and my farrier never ever got that that particular leg couldn’t . be cranked up to trim… (grrrrrr :expressionless: )

Entirely different type of supplement, and I do know some people who have very good success with it. It does nothing for others. Allergies are all different, so unfortunately all you can do is try things :frowning:

The PP supplement doesn’t provide energy, so can’t really “overgrow” a foal. But it’s unbalanced in nutrients, and doesn’t provide a lot of copper or zinc, which are critical components of healthy joint growth.

I just started their Refresh formula. My mother uses one of their supps for her draft prone to sweet itch; possibly the skin and allergy formula you mention. Neither of us use their base vitamin stuff. We stuck with our Pat Colby style mineral mix.

The draft has shown excellent improvement with his sweet itch. My horse regained normal sweating in 5 days. I wouldn’t hesitate to try another one of their products if the need arose.

My mother also uses the Refresh on her other horse. He had quit sweating normally years ago, but just started Refresh this year. That horse has improved thermoregulation; but not anything close to the results my horse got. Since mom had Refresh on hand I was able to get it into my horse the day after he quit sweating.

As another poster mentioned; sometimes we have to experiment with what works. But I’d surely give their product a trial and wouldn’t bother with their base wellness vitamin mess!

Best of luck to you and your horse!

I have a sensitive skinned horse who loves to break out in hives and rain rot, and gets scratches very easily. I’ve had him on ground flax and msm for years, and it helps a great deal. I was given a 60 day supply of PP and used it, and really saw no difference. So I went back to the ground flax and msm, which was maybe 1/5 of the cost per day, and haven’t looked back.
