Please: Advice on the following stallions

I have an excellent mare with fantastic breeding (by Randel Z out of Vanessa). She is 16hh and a VERY scopy, careful jumper. We are going to breed with her , and I was wondering if anyone could give me any knowledge about the temperaments, and how big they ‘stamp’ (how big their offspring are etc) or any other advice, on the following few stallions:

Larino
Chacco-Blue
Cardento
Corland
Burggraaf
Heartbreaker

Any help would be MUCH appreciated

Shea- I think the best advice to give you would be to study your mare and really have an idea of what qualities/conformation you would like to keep and what needs to be improved. Of the list above you have some very, very different stallions so it is hard to get a feel for what you are looking for. Also make sure you research semen quality and availability. Heartbreaker is terrible quality even if you can get ahold of a dose and Chacco-Blue is also very difficult to find. It can also be a fun/educational exercise to look on the telex and study what your mares siblings/dam line had been successfully crossed with in the past. That will give you and idea of what lines may give you the most successful crosses. Have fun and make sure you are using a super repro vet who specializes in frozen semen since you are gravitating towards frozen that is expensive pet dose.

How important is semen quality in your consideration of stallions? A few of the stallions on your list have iffy semen quality.

Thank you so much for replying. My mare has a phenomenal jump and technique. She is careful and brave. She has a very petite build and is 16hh. So, some of the stallions I have mentioned above are frozen semen which are available to me. My personal favourites are CARDENTO, VERDI and CHACCO-BLUE.
I have heard that Cardento has weak loins/bad topline- could anyone confirm this with me?

Bearing in mind, that my mare is small, we would want to breed with a stallion which will “throw” big… ie- the offspring will be closer to the stallions height than the mare’s.

Also, there are a lot of super stallions out there, but with nasty temperaments and no rideability. So I would like to choose something with height, good temperament and rideability to suit my mare.

As we are using frozen semen, the quality of it must be very good as the process is expensive and only a certain number of doses might be available. And for some stallions, only one dose is available but others there are 3doses.

Any info on whether any of these stallions semen is good or not would be appreciated as well

Some

I can send photos of my mare and her breeding to you, if you would give me advice on how to? Thank you

My mare, Helderfontein Ecstasy, can be found on horse telex.com as follows:

www.horsetelex.com/horses/pedigree/1585452

If you wouldn’t mind having a look and seeing what stallions you think may be suited to her?
If you would like to see photos of her, you could send me your e-mail and I could send them to you?

You have two of the same threads going?

Sorry, Trot Trot Pumpkin, didn’t mean to start 2 threads- am very new to this and wasn’t sure how to work the site

Mare? Telex has listed as gelding. Sporthorse database also has pics and info on gelding with the same name.

Hmm, that is strange! The horse telex reference I posted is my horses correct breeding though

Is that your mare?

Dam line seems to cross well with Carthago, so maybe take a look at Colman? Looks like C- line is the right direction. Hopefully some of the Holstein experts will chime in with their infinite wisdom. Make sure to research semen quality - Chacco-Blue was difficult for a friend of mine last year

That is indeed my mare. Unfortunatley, nothing of the Carthago line is available here in South Africa. Thank you very much for you help, I need to keep researching the stallions available

I take it your from South Africa. And that telex is wrong and you have a mare from the above mare?

My 2 cents?
You have some serious stallions on your list that most people can’t even find semen for. If your going to use that type of quality and have that level of expense, you should find someone with experience to help you and look at your mare in person. The people selling you the semen should have some knowledge of what each stallion brings or you could phone the former owners of the stallions or the farms they stood at. To be honest, asking on a forum for help with your stallion choices is very amateur but the horses involved are not. This is not meant as an insult, it is meant to guild you towards finding a way better resource than an on-line forum. There are people here with knowledge of those stallions but they don’t know your mare. The knowledge of breeding is not come by that easily, you should probably find a much better source so the semen/effort/money is not wasted.

PS - Because I do not know your situation at all, I might add that IF the people selling you the semen have this type of stock they are probably “in the know about these stallions”.
But, and because I do not know your situation and loads of different people come on here, I would make sure these people are actually selling semen by these horses and it is not a scam.

Hi there. Thanks for the advice. Yes I am speaking to professionals that can guide me in the right direction, I just wanted to get a feel for if anyone had bred with those stallions and what they thought of them. I would obviously not make a decision based on the opinions of the people on the forum, but would take them into consideration. As you quite correctly said, it is very important to take my own mare into consideration. Thanks for your help, Shea

I love Verdi and what he throws, his semen is good. That being said, I would hesitate to breed the mare you have described to him if you want to get height. You will probably not improve the height but get the mare’s height. My mare who was bred to Verdi is 16 hh. The resulting foal (now 6) is about 15.3 - 16.0 hh but extremely athletic.

Thanks sfstable! much appreciated x
