Pleasure Driving - What'd you think?

Basically looks like WP horses put under harness. I think it’s pretty neat!

Example: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ce9gIcw9rSs&feature=related

I kinda am thinking some of the hardcore purists in here are gonna barf all over this, but that’s okay.

It was hard to tell, but it looked like the horses were all in overchecks, which I thought kind of funny. Must’ve been adjusted REALLLL loose. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well I have to admit, I wouldn’t mind having a Paint or ApHC to do the Pleasure Driving classes in… APHA has a trail class for harness called Utility Pleasure Driving. It’s not at all popular but I wouldn’t mind having a Paint just for that class.

But I do agree that 98% of them don’t know anything about driving. I also laugh at the use of over and side-checks. Totally defeats the purpose of the check. But I can tell you that the majority of those people believe that “a harness has to have one of them check thingies…”

I can tell you though that some of them that do show in the Pleasure Driving do try to go more traditionally, with the heads higher, better movement, correct set-up, etc. But their are the ones that also show in ADS shows. I once tried out a really cute ApHC mare that had plenty of Pleasure Driving points on her, but she also had some ADS Pleasure Driving wins. I wish I snatched her up but at the time I was looking for a riding horse, which she was not.

I just want to run in there and crack a whip, loudly!

Well to be fair, they DO ask them to move out; the entire video isn’t them jogging or walking.

I’ve read the rules for the classes, a whip is listed under optional equipment. So, cracking a whip loudly may cause an interesting reaction…

exactly!

One of the things I love when I drive is looking ahead and “aiming between the ears,” so to speak.

I can see that the discipline depicted in the video is not my cup of tea.

How boring a drive would it be if you have to sit and look square at a horse’s rump the whole darn day?

LOL. I know the person who owns and drives this horse!!! I agree, why would you want to drive a vehicle that low and go that slow?.. AQHA is truly a world of its own.

Thing is, if the AQHA/APHA disciplines could JUST SAY NO to the whole peanut-pushing thing, I would be sooooooo much more interested in joining their party.

They have some cool ideas: I loff the idea of driven trail; I loff, loff, LOFF their ridden trail; and I really REALLY loff the whole idea of the AQHA “Superhorse” competition.

These are all fun and great marketing ideas. Spoiled by a headset.

Being from an ASB background, I fell asleep during the first 10 seconds of the clip. LOL

Sorry, they just look funny to me.

OK here’s my question
Why sit way over to the left in the vehicle yet hold your hands/arms way out to the right to keep them sort-of straight to the horse (more than one person in that class is doing this)
Why not just sit in the middle of the just-wider-than-seats-one seat?

I would rather watch paint dry.

If they sat right behind the horse they wouldn’t be able to see where they were going!

First impression… what are they all looking for down there?

I remember judging and QH Pleasure driving horse at a local 4H show some years back. I remember being more impressed with the super thin ‘fine harness’ on this big bulldog-y QH than the headset. It looked like a large lady in a string bikini

Hard to believe these are the same species as the ones in the OP!

Agreed. BTW, since you’re into the Fine Harness stuff, you may like to know (if you don’t already) that the word on the street is that South African stallion, WGC CCV Casey’s Final Countdown, who was the five-gaited world champion last year, MAY POSSIBLY show at Louisville this year in… Fine Harness! That will surely be something to see, if he really does it.

BTW thanks for the Tuigpaard vid. Gorgeous!!! I’d really loff to see one of those “up close and personal” some day.

I have to agree with the poster who said watching paint dry is more interesting - and probably more animated too! It would be like going nowhere - and in slow motion. If I could walk faster than that myself, why ride or drive? Hehe!

I’m not hardcore anything, but peanut-rolling is just BOR-ing to me. The horses look like they could fall asleep at any moment, and the riders/drivers would not notice because they’re probably already asleep. Training that couldn’t keep my attention for more than about 10 minutes.

OK, it’s like riding a bike. You have to ride at least a certain speed or you fall over. These horses look like they’re ready to fall over. My Haffie pony’s walk is at least as fast as these sleepy jog trots. It’s called purposeful, I believe. Meaning to me that there is no purpose in a head so low and a walk so slow.

To each his own though.

Wendy

Reminds me of why I stopped showing on the quarter horse circuit and moved over to eventing (the dark side!) and driving.

Ouch… this was the kind of response I was expecting, at least.

I dunno, I guess its because I’m no driving expert, and that I’m a WP fan (when done properly!), I think these horses are fun to watch. In the very least, they look quiet, well-trained, and dependable. It seems they would be more “beginner friendly” than a fine harness horse, but like I said, I don’t know much at all about driving.

OH DEAR!!
