A friend of mine has a really nice POA mare, that she would like to breed to have a registered POA foal. She has been looking at Welsh, Arabian, QH and Appaloosa stallions. (she wants a little more height as her mare is smaller, and kind of light boned). But, she can’t find (and i looked too and haven’t found), can she breed to a non-POA stallion and register the foal POA? she found a welsh (sec C I think it is) and an Arabian that both may work.
“The POA ranges in height from 46 to 56 inches at the withers. They must exhibit characteristics and an approved coat pattern to be eligible for registration. You can get a POA by crossing registered POAS: by crossing a registered POA with a registered horse or pony of an approved breed (see handbook for listing); or, by crossing a registered POA with a grade horse or pony that has been identified with the POAC for breeding purposes.”

That’s what we found, we just can’t find the “approved breeds” lol.

Glad to help! It seems kind of funny to me that they don’t consider Welsh to be an approved cross??? I wouldn’t have guessed that exclusion in a million years!
i didn’t see shetland listed either, and i would have thought they would be for sure… lol.
You can also Hardship register, by the way. The POA mare I rode for many years was hardshipped, had no papers of any kind prior to registration. But for hardship, they need to be in the height requirements and MUST display appy characteristics (appy coloration, mottled skin, sclera, striped hooves, etc) and cannot be used as breeding stock (in the case of mares, stallions can’t be hardshipped at all).
The POA registry is strange in that it’s a pony breed but will only register ponies up to 14 hands (not 14.2 hh). going over height is a big problem in the breed.

Especially since the 1st horse to be registered as a POA was half Shetland!

That’s why i found it odd lol.
Probably because the American Shetland has gotten so far away from the original due to crossing with hackneys.
The Welsh is not out. According to the list you would need to check with the POA registry to see if the bloodlines could be approved.

True, but the Foundation and classic haven’t gotten far away. I would think they’d be on the “limited approval” list as well.
Oh well, she wants slightly bigger, not smaller so shetland wasn’t the way she is going anyway lol. The mare is 13.2hh and she wants 14hh and a bit more bone, so the 14.1hh Arabian is on the list, as is his son who is about the same size (maybe a hair taller) but not grey. She is a bit worried about the grey of the stallion. (and in either case, as i told her, ya can always register it Half-Arabian lol).

You can register Half Welsh too
Why is the Welsh out? It says Welsh Pony Society of America on there as a limited approval? It may be worth seeing if they like the stallion.
