Point Given as a sire

I always thought Point Given was one of Bob Baffert’s best horses, and his only clunker race was the 2001 Kentucky Derby. He was spectacular after that, especially the Belmont win, and was never beaten again.

What are people’s opinions on him as a sire? His sales records have been disappointing, but he’s sired some fine racehorses - Go Between, Sealy Hill, Point Ashley.

Is he in any danger of being shipped out of KY and/or shipped overseas?

He’s a moderate sire. So far he’s gotten enough “big” horses to keep him here but he’s been pretty much a disappointment overall. I wouldn’t be surprised if he got sold but they’ve stuck with him this long.

I galloped one that was an absolute pig. Big, mean and slow. Thank heavens they gelded him eventually and removed all that badness from the potential gene pool. If I had to go off that one I would geld PG fast!!

My understanding is that while a heck of a racehorse, he is not the best looking and has tended to pass that on to his foals. This has obviously hurt him in the sales ring.

For the expectations, he has been a flop. As a sire in general, he is ok.

Yeah but sure as heck makes fine sports horses…

I’ve known two. Both were flops on the track and being used as broodmares. The first looked a lot like him; plain chestnut, but I wouldn’t call her ugly or badly conformed. Stereotypical chestnut mare attitude. The other was bay and built like a QH. Big old fashioned mare. Not sure of her temperament; never saw her interact out of the pasture.

Are there a lot of Point Given’s offspring out there off the track or never made it, but now doing well in a non-racing career?

One horse does not a sire, or family, make. Years ago I rode an absolute pig that was by Raise a Native (to whom Point Given is inbred 4x4) out of Zenyatta’s third dam. This colt would stand straight up in the shedrow rather than jog and never won a race, but clearly others from both his sire and dam lines had plenty of ability.

According to the 2012 BH Stallion Register, Point Given has a 1.64 average earnings index and comparable AEI of 1.76, meaning his offspring do not perform quite as well as his mares’ produce by other sires; however, it is close enough to say that they do perform about as well since this average can be skewed by a couple of mares that had mega-stars by another stallion and average runners by PG. He has sired 74% starters and 63% winners from starters with average earnings per starter of $64,000, all within the range for successful but not outstanding sires.

Still a little early. Alot of the mid level breeders he would attract have cut back a little, definately fewer foals being registered these days. Been some big names that have taken awhile to establish themselves and quite a few proven great on pedigrees a generation back as broodmare sires.

Waaay to early to evaluate his worth as a Sporthorse sire or grandsire.
