Polish Warmblood - Anyone familiar?

Is anyone familiar with Polish Warmbloods? My guy’s dam is supposed to be one and I was given her registration number but can’t find a way to use it on the Polish Horse Breeders Association site… Not critical, just curious about his mother’s side.

Are you talking about the Wielkolposki breed?

PaulaM, I honestly don’t know. The more I look into it, the more complicated it seems to become… Two different “native” wb breeds, the Wielkolposki you mentioned and the Malopolska, plus a sport horse-type bred in Poland which can be a wb x wb or a tb or draft x, from what I’ve read - and that’s as far as I’ve gotten

Poland has traditionally bred very good horses - Polish Arabs were the single most valuable export under the Communist regime - but they have not yet got their act together on promoting their Warmbloods. A little bit more history: the Trakehner, or East Prussian horse, fled west in the aftermath of WW2 and breeding continued in West Germany. The old stud farm was located in what became Poland and the bloodlines that had been left behind continued as the Masuren, now Weilkopolski. The Malopolski is another riding type, variable according to percentage of TB. One thing is that horse draught power was important up into the 1990s and Polish WB are generally of good nature and good bone because they had to useful.

Have a look in the Horse & Hound forum where there are several discussions about Polish WB. I’ve met them in both France and Italy as a good horse for a tourist - me - to ride for a week.

Cannot say I’m an expert on the pedigrees but I did spend a lot of time at some of the Polish eventing competitions and they breed some pretty amazing horses. So does the rest of eastern Europe but since competing is quite expensive for most of us these horses rarely make it out of eastern Europe.

One that did is Pawel Spisaks Banderas (Moravia x Jape XX) who was the first ever Polish bred horse to make it on the podium at the World Championships for young eventing horses at Lion d’Angers back in 2013. This duo also made it to Rio 2016 where they had a horror fall and in Tryon 2018 they ended 22 out of the 83 combinations.

Not sure if you have had any luck, but I just had a great experience contacting the PZHK about my Polish Warmblood. If you have the dam’s number and she’s PZHK registered I’d bet they would help you out. I got their email off their website, emailed them in the evening and had a reply by the time I woke up the next day.
