Polo shirts for dressage - as sported at NAJYRC
They actually look like athletes in the summer.

Now that we’ve accepted the ear bonnets for horses, and you can wear polo shirts for some one-days and for doing jumpers at H/J shows, I think we should move towards the polo for dressage and stadium. What do you think?
I’ve been for it FOREVER. If I never wear a jacket again, I’d be thrilled.

Me too, BFNE!! HATE that stupid jacket look. HATE cooking like a lobster.

Unless forcibly stuffed into the jacket, I always wear a polo, either blue or white with blue seam piping for a little colour. But it’s white wicking fabric and I much prefer the blue. And I NEVER wear white pants, yuck.

First time I did that I had 2 horses at a local schooling show. After my 2nd ride, the judge stopped me and told me I should be wearing a coat. After informing him of the new rule, he said “well, I didn’t know that it was now a rule… but you should still be wearing a jacket.” Good grief.n.
Tell the judge that he should be wearing a wig and robe!

Ear Bonnets are only permitted for dressage “under exceptional circumstances”, and only with the express permission of the Ground Jury

Ear bonnets ARE allowed always now in FEI competitions (eventing). No need for permission.

Have to say that I hate white around horses! Talk about being a target for green slobber! I think it’s actually a sport for some horses!

To me, a navy or black polo with tan breeches looks the best, especially when paired with black boots and navy or black helmet. I like to add a little color with my belt! You will never see me in white breeches with a white polo!

I wish the USEF/USEA would just go ahead and okay ear bonnets like the FEI. We use them all the time for driven dressage (looks super nice when you match the bonnet to the carriage; for example, we do a black/gold bonnet with our black carriage with straw pinstriping and buckskin pony). BUT we do not use them for appearances ~ we use them for their purpose: to keep gnats out of ears, which results in much happier ponies! They are also great for keeping rain from dripping down ears.

Glad to see some one has noted that a “3” is from Polo. The “3” plays a very important center position on the four person team.

Polo came before Lauren. 3 before Joules.

I dislike jackets. I sold my animo because I retired my big comp horse and am unofficial for everything right now.

We are allowed in aus to go without a jacket if it is too hot (which is from the start of spring to about half way through autumn). I usually wear a shirt like this on those days. We aren’t allowed to wear just polos. It has to be a collared shirt and tie or a ratcatcher type shirt.

Since I don’t do recongnized (besides the random blip on my otherwise easy schedule) I always wear a polo.

I don’t care if a judge makes a comment, I’m much more capable of taking care of my horse when I’m not over-heated. I wouldn’t make hi wear a quarter-sheet in the heat just because it looks better!

One time my sister “borrowed” my favorite show polo (one of the longer ones that you can tuck in nicely) and I went crazy!! Poor girl, she just didn’t know what she was swiping.

I love the look. Neat, tidy, professional.

I’m not convinced the tucked in polo look works for everyone though. If you have a nice body yes, if you have muffin tops, no.

Even without the muffin top I look like a potato on a horse in a fitted polo.

I love the polos, and I too prefer dark. I would appreciate a rule change that would clarify that dark polos are permitted when jackets are waived.

You’re still theoretically supposed to wear a jacket in the classics for Jumpers, but around here they waive them pretty quick. I was very glad this weekend not to have to put mine on…

I have read this comment a few times now and I am still ROTFLMAO.

I like the look of polos now with the lower rise breeches. On me, the high waisted TS breeches combined with my shortish torso and a polo were pretty horrific. Also, polos being made much more slim fittish and tucked make a huge difference.

A slim cut shirt and untucked can be a very good look too, even slightly suggestive of a jacket.

Add me to the list of all these others who like the look and feel of the almighty polo! I hate being so hot while riding…and this is coming from someone who loves the 100+ degree weather!

honestly as a 51 year old woman having hot flashes I would love to have the option of a polo and a sportier look It seems like even when jackets are waved everyone still wears them. I would also love black breeches as an option.

ldbgcoleman, when jackets are waived, or when you are doing all three phases on one day (as we often do here in area II), just do it! Who cares what everyone else is doing!! I promise you it DOES NOT MATTER if it is legal.

I am very interested to read this thread, as we have had this conversation on this board in years past, and it has always had two very passionate sides – the “yes, it’s a sport, thank god” side (well represented here) and the “it is traditional and shows respect and to abandon it is to diminish the sport” side (which has been totally silent on this thread).

Do we think there has been a fundamental shift in the sport on this issue? (says a hopeless partisan for being comfortable, fair warning…)
