I am very interested to read this thread, as we have had this conversation on this board in years past, and it has always had two very passionate sides – the “yes, it’s a sport, thank god” side (well represented here) and the “it is traditional and shows respect and to abandon it is to diminish the sport” side (which has been totally silent on this thread).
Do we think there has been a fundamental shift in the sport on this issue? (says a hopeless partisan for being comfortable, fair warning…)[/QUOTE]
I think that since this thread was started discussing NAYRC specifically, and given HOW hot it was during that event, the tradition contingent couldn’t say much without sounding like they were endangering the lives of those riders.
I’m typically a traditionalist in that I want clean, neat, conservative appearance and I’d love for it to somehow reflect the origins and traditions of the sport. I do NOT want lycra bodysuits to become even a hint of an option, nor do I want to see riders at Rolex decked out like NASCAR drivers, covered in sponsor logos (sorry… that looks tacky to me). Of course I also have ties to the military myself so maybe I have a more biased (for lack of a better word) view on it. Yes, I will wear a polo, or long sleeve shirt with a vest if it’s cold, and do it happily… so maybe my views are changing slightly. But on this particular thread it didn’t make sense to bring up traditionalist dress views. 1) it really was an issue of safety for the riders at NAYRC and 2) when it comes to 1-day events, the rule is already there regarding the ability to wear polos.
