Pony breeders-Suggestions please

I need help finding a pony stallion. What better place to come? I’ve bred horses for years, but ponies is a new venture for me, so please bear with me.

I might have the opportunity to breed a Quarter Horse mare this spring. I have been dropping hints to her owner for years, and for whatever reason, she has finally cozied up to the possibility of leasing the mare. For that reason, I cannot actually post a photo yet (which would be supremely helpful, I know), but here’s a description:

15.1 hh, buckskin
(Sky Blue Walker {16 hh} x foundation-bred mare {15.1 hh})
wicked legged at both the trot and the canter; huge step
beautiful jump

Things to improve: she’s a bit plain-headed, her neck ties in a little too deep for my tastes, and she’s a smidgen too long over her top.

I was absolutely smitten with Otteridge Foxtrot, but that’s sadly no longer an option.

Given her size and these conformation deficiencies, what ponies might be best sutied to her. First off, what size pony should I be considering? My immediate thought runs to small, just for safety’s sake. Is this the right approach?

I picked up a Virginia Pony Breeders Association directory at the Pony Finals this year, and I noticed some small stallions in there.

Thoughts on Pengwyn? How tall is he?

Picturesque Formal Attire?

Telynau Gallant? Telynau Masterpiece? Wellen Red Rock?

I just trying to gather information. I appreciate all input.

Thank you about Foxtrot… :frowning:

HOWEVER!!! He has several standing sons that are magnificent!
One is in South Carolina, one in Florida. Both stellar and have Foxtrot’s amazing movement.

Trotting For Gold (Florida) - http://www.ponyvillefarm.com/trotting-gold.html

Tantallon Outfoxed - (South Carolina) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrnbchz-VTk
Beautifully bred (both sons are). Dam of this one is the dam of Pony Dot Com.

As the former owner of Pengwyn I can answer most questions for you. he is a section A and does not have the movement you are looking for.

Pony Stallion

We have a small pony stallion that we show in the 2yo Pony Hunter Breeding for his owner. He will be standing his first season next year. He’s around 12.2 right now, although I haven’t measured him in a while. He’s chestnut with a stripe down his face and three socks. His owner bought three ponies from the Farnley Sale to breed to him next year and we are looking for a large to breed to him. His name is Midsummer Knights Encounter. He has an extensive show record in Hunter Breeding in Zone 2. Please email me if you’d like additional information kjraach@gmail.com. Virgina Bred, both of the ponies you listed are adorable.

I would recommend breeding to a smaller Sec. B Welsh to get the refinement and movement I assume you are looking for. 2 of my 4 stallions are on the smaller side - one is 12.2hh - Land’s End Rondo (*Carolinas Red Fox X *Llanarth Rhapsody) - dark liver chestnut sabino and the other is Barkmeadow Black Gold - 12.3hh (*Pendock Sir Percy X *Pendock Hickory ) - he is homozygous black so crossed with a buckskin mare he will produce a buckskin, bay, black or smokey black. Both have 100% imported bloodlines so no hidden size to pop up. If you go to the Welsh Pony and Cob Society website. www.welshpony.org, you will see listings of several more stallions. Best of luck in your pony stallion search!

Thanks for these suggestions. I am in the information-gathering phase right now, given the season, but I am enjoying looking at all of these stallions. As I mentioned in my original post, breeding for a pony is new to me, so the learning curve is steep.
