Maybe you should take another look at those ponies, the ones with the too tall pro kids are going great. These are not the kids with self-image problems. And I think suitability should be one of the most important requirements for ponies.
It’s the National Finals for Ponies, the Big League, the Show, do we really need to water it down so more can get ribbons in the name of self esteem? Or take pride in doing the best they can in the same ring as the big dogs who win because it’s a better Pony with a better ride.
Its a “real” sport with actual winners, like to see it stay that way.
Honestly, think some of the younger kids you see here today are a mite too young to understand competition in sports. A certain level of maturity (for want of a better word) is required for actual competition where not everybody gets something. It’s tough for some 7 year olds to understand there is much benefit in learning by watching those who are better and that makes the trip worthwhile. Heck, that’s tough for some parents.
the “pro” pony riders have been doing this for years, its nothing new. You have the kids showing in the Big Eq and Junior Hunters/Hunter Derbys show up in jods and paddock boots to ride in the pony hunters. At least keep your tall boots on. But that is the way it is at the finals. You show up with your game face on and do your best. You really never know how its going to go. The model and U/S is really such a small portion of the overall score. Honestly, the classes are decided in the O/F rounds where it really matters. A few years back so many of the top ponies after the model/hack couldn’t make it around the course and plummeted in the standings
I agree, if you’re doing the big eq, hunter derbies, jumpers, etc you shouldn’t be showing up to ride ponies at PF, especially in jods and paddock boots. The only people to blame here are the owners/trainers doing this move. Unfortunately that’s the way it’s always been so you just have to shrug it off and move on
There are age limits for each size pony. This is an objective standard to regulate pony pro’s. I do not think it is appropriate for judges to decide what riders are too tall v. a little big v. appropriately sized for each pony.
I am 100% against any watering down, but I do not think OTR is that at all (as opposed to, say, lowering the large pony height). But OTR awards would go a long way towards encouraging kids to bring along/train up younger ponies, and aren’t we forever griping about the lack of such a desire? This whole “do it for the sake of doing it” thing isn’t really working, there needs to be something at the shows that rewards such a path when possible. And with 170 medium ponies here there is plenty of room for that.
I agree, giving “owner to ride” or “American bred” or “best mare” or “thoroughbred” or other similar special recognition in addition to pinning trips is not watering down or giving consolation prizes. It’s recognizing a totally different accomplishment, which IMHO is often very appropriate to reward. Not just at Pony Finals but at other shows too. I think if we want to emphasize certain aspects of the sport we have to call out their accomplishments for that emphasized reason.

HU137 Pony Hunter
Manners of the pony and suitability of the pony to the rider must be emphasized in all classes. Extreme speed must be penalized. Suitability of a pony for a rider is determined by height of rider as related to the height of the pony. Judges must penalize but not necessarily eliminate an entry not having such suitability and manners. BOD 1/12/14 Effective 12/1/14.

Not in the Greens. IME most of the older kids in there are NOT there because they want to be but fulfilling a committment to trainer/owner or trying to get a project Pony sold for college money.
There are a few kids that got a late start or never got to the big time in there too, not fair to assume an older, bigger kid is necessarily overqualified.
On the OTR, there are young kids with 3 more Ponies recorded in their names, all high quality and coming with hefty price tags. That’s not going to spread much out.

There are no age limits in the greens, just have to be a junior. And size of rider vs. pony comes under suitability, which apparently is no longer a factor. Its not a matter of being a little too big or tall, many of yesterday’s pros were towering over the ponies they ride, its ridiculous.
It took longer than I thought for the comments about BPs ponies, older pony jocks and the unfairness (though that word may not have surfaced yet).
This is the best of the best. Some of these ponies are not the easiest to get around and DO require technical rides. It’s not like Suzie B qualified the pony and now Betty Big Eq is stepping in to ride the pony in most cases. It’s a competition. All the ponies who are there qualified. Horse showing will never be a level playing field. There will always be someone with more money, more talent, moe experience, more ponies etc.
How many caveats are we going to try to put in place so people can feel good about losing? Just because a rider does the big eq does not necessarily guarantee anything. They are older, have more training, have been around more and could be on fancier ponies. That is why they are winning.
I’m a pony mom with a kid with a really fancy small pony. I am aware when we are at the PF point (if we go that way) that there will be other ponies who will out class us, kids who outride us. It can be an accomplishment in itself to be riding at PF. Don’t sour it (sportsmanship anyone?) with the “Of course XXX pony won, it had X aboard and they spent $$$$$$ on the pony”.
It is the same in other areas of our sport. As an owner, you may try to get the best pro rider to showcase your horse in the PreGreens, or stand you horse on the line. It just happens that these are kids and ponies. But this is a sport and there will be winners and there will be losers. It will never be a totally level playing field (and neither is life outside of horses, so get used to it).

But to be entirely honest, I’m just not sure why there’s no rule in place along the lines of “those competing at pf cannot have shown over 3’6, excluding the children’s jumpers”. Honestly it just makes sense. I’m not one who thinks we need to water down the ponies at all, in fact if you ask me, the height needs to be raised not lowered. PJs in Europe are consistently jumping much higher than ours, with an addition that they have a height for each size pony and even pony prixs. I’m too young to honestly know what the “good ole days” were like, but I think we’ve come as far from the ideal as possible.
Don’t forget this is the premiere showcase for breeders. It’s their business. There are plenty of other opportunities at a bazillion other shows then what amounts to the National Finals for Ponies, their trainers and their breeders. This one is all about crowning the best Ponies, not unlike a breed show.
And there is the Pony Medal.

They are building the course right now.

They might be done with the Small Model and Hack and building for the Large over fences. With the course walk that comes first, it might be awhile. Then they will be jumping for 4 hours or so.
