Pony Finals 22--which ring?

Does anyone have any inside scoop on which ring will be used for Pony Finals this year?

Daughter and pony have qualified for the first time and we are trying to gauge whether or not it is worth it to go to the show at KHP the week prior to PF or if it’s better to spend our money on an additional rated show sometime over the spring/summer prior to heading to KY. Pony is green and has limited rated miles, though he has had about a year and a half on our competitive local circuit, where he was very successful. We’re trying to weigh all the pros and cons. We aren’t expecting to win PF, but want to give kid and pony the best chance of having a positive experience. Seems like a great opportunity to get comfortable at the horse park, but I’m operating on a budget and need to be thoughtful about how I spend my money! I’m guessing the Rolex isn’t as scary as the Walnut, so that’s why I’m asking about the ring–but maybe it’s scary no matter which ring you’re in!

Any other first-timer tips appreciated. We’re a little team–trainer, kid, mom and pony. Thanks!

Go to the KHP show the week before. Its big and busy, lots and lots of Ponies. No way you can recreate that or the vast KHP grounds at some other, “ normal” show.

Your child can get more comfortable too. PF is one shot, one round. More time you can spend there before, easier it will be for child and Pony.

I 100% agree with findeight. The more comfortable your kid & pony are on grounds, the more relaxed they will be for PF. However, IME, the ring that is to be used for PF will be closed off to ponies the weeks leading up to PF (it will be used for jumpers usually) so to avoid advantage to those showing at the summer shows. Once PF starts, kids will be able to hack in the ring once or twice, that’s it.

I still think there is an advantage to being at the KHP the week before PF.

Have FUN!!!

No doubt going to KHP the week before would be the best bang for the buck. You’ll all get to find your way around without the pressure of being at PF. Learn the lay of the land, etc. Especially for a green with limited miles, you don’t want pony to be star struck by the size and activity at the venue.
