Would you be comfortable using a 17" saddle on a medium sized pony? How far back is too far back for the saddle to rest?
Struggling with the way my 17" saddle looks on my medium pony, maybe because I am used to 17hh+ horses and how it looks on them?
It really depends on the pony and even the saddle. The rule I use is to look on their body where the hair meets when it changes direction. Then I’ll draw a line up from there and that’s as far back as your saddle can go.

From the top where the hair swirls or just up from the stifle area?
I have always followed the rule that the saddle shouldn’t extend past the last rib. Of course, if the pony if fluffy and chubby, that rib isn’t always easy to find!
