Pony saddle for horse?

Im not really looking at getting a saddle at the moment, but since my dad is getting a better job I’ve been doing some research. I’m going to go on lots of trail/pleasure rides and I don’t need anything big and flashy. I rescued my horse and since then shes gained at least 200 hundred pounds. Her ribs are no longer showing but her hips aren’t the best (but she had a baby really young and the starving was obviously going on for a while, so I’m not sure if it’ll get better). Our friends are letting us borrow a saddle and from the gullet I can put my arm to the middle of the seat! I’m going to through a wild card and say it’s to big. We won’t have the money to get something custom made, do you think a pony saddle would work? I’m at least 5’6 and so I don’t need a saddle meant for kids. She’s 3 (as I know but the guy lied a lot) and 14.2 hands. I’m thinking I’m just going to have buy and sell a ton before I find something that works. :ambivalence:. Do you have any ideas? I’m probably going to but off Craigslist list or something like that. I’ll check it out before I pay though. Any ideas?

I’m not understanding what you are describing. Can you post pictures?

Are you trying to say the saddle is “perched” on her back?

If she’s 3, and was previously underweight, she is going to change A LOT. What you find to fit now may not even fit a couple months down the road as she grows and as she gets better fitness and a better weight.

She’s most definately not a pony so a pony saddle will not work.

I have no idea when you replied, I honestly didn’t remember posting this at all! She’s gotten better since then and I know a lot more now. We don’t have that saddle currently with us any more but to answer your questions.

  1. The saddle was perched on her back and from the bottom of the swell to her back I could physically put my arm through it and though the middle of the saddle.

  2. She has grown TONS! She is now 15hh and I’m now fairly certain that a FQHB saddle will fit her. I can still post pictures of her tomorrow if you want me to though.

She is filled out more but her hips are still not in peak condition, from what I read/heard that will take a while to fill out. Thanks for the reply and I’m tremendously sorry that I didn’t respond I completely forgot about this thread.

That original saddle you posted about was too small–not too big. Go to horsesaddleshop.com and check out their saddle fitting info. It should help you find a properly fitting saddle.

That website is actually where I found those templates I was telling y’all about. Its a great website, I know now it was to small not to big. I learned TONS in the last few months on saddle fitting. I should get out of bed now and start the day but I’ll try and post pics with and without the templates.

The templates are a place to start but keep in mind those are ONLY addressing one small aspect of saddle fit (estimate bar angle and gullet width) and not addressing anything else.

Check out this website and also this one to educate yourself a bit.

Sorry it rained here today and was really ugly out so I didn’t get the pictures. I’ll try again tomorrow.

The batteries in my camera leaked and ruined my camera, luckily my Sd card is fine. I think I can still get pictures with my sisters camera. I’m going outside to the horses in a moment so I can get pictures then.

Well yesterday we went out and and today I get to go in a 7 hour pointless trip. Yay! Not!

But I do have another question she is gaited is there any thing I should worry about? The gaited saddles just flare more in the front, so I wouldn’t think it would be a problem.
