For those of you who have or ride a Welsh pony, mine is a lovely 12.1 mare. What have you found to be the best fitting saddle for their rolly polly body types?
I have welsh and welsh x’s, and my 16" Antares fits my medium and large wide ponies really well! My guys were 13h to 14.2h. Saddle is a wide (was a custom, but I bought it second hand).
The pony barn I went to had all their ponies in a Childeric M if I recall correctly
Hands down the Pessoa pony saddle. I am 5’6 and squeeze into a 15 3/4". Mine is a wide and has fit every pony I have ever sat on (a lot of them!). All my French saddles slide forward and posted with me (Antares, Devoucoux, etc). A Butet might also be an option. The less padding the better.
Totally forgot about the pessoa pony! one to try for sure.
My older Butet fit every horse and pony that I plopped it on. It fit the fatter pony types the best.
I ride my 13.1 pony in a Hastilow Concept jump, it’s been fitted to her as a 3XW (yes, not a typo) and doesn’t roll around. The fitter said there is a “cob” version with more upswept panels, geared toward ponies and short-backed horses, mine is the regular and while technically a bit too long for her she is so wide that the weight is very distributed. It’s not a typical “hunter” looking saddle but comfort over looks.
Pessoa pony is always highly recommended on these threads and I used to ride a large pony that had the Pessoa junior, it was a very nice saddle. I also rode him in my CWD and his owners Antares which both fit him well, but he didn’t have a typical pony body, he was built like a horse which just never made it past 14.2.
