Poor ugly horse on CL

Anyone need an ugly Hackney Pony? She’s well fed and cared for, just plug ugly. So ugly, she’s almost cute.

Or, am I just not familiar with the finer points of the breed and cannot recognize true beauty? She does have a bucket seat. Perhaps that’s a sporty selling point that I am missing.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’ve owned some plugs myself. A little 12.2 pony that rides and drives could be a real gem for a child. To the right child, she would be an beautiful as a unicorn.

Well fed? I bet she’d be a lot less “ugly” if she were well fed. In working condition (well fed + muscled up) she’d probably be quite attractive.

That’s a new take on “well fed!”

She has a dropped back so maybe she is old or has been a broodmare.

Awful photo doesn’t help either. No muscle.
I bet she could be much cuter than she looks

Can this be the next coth pony? Poor thing

Awww…yes…maybe the hay could be moved away slightly;-) I do wonder how old she is. I can’t use a pony, but i feel badly.

Aww she’s not that bad. I think if you let her tail grow out and got some topline on she’d be fine. She looks either older or like she’s had foals. Hackneys move nicely!

I’ll help with a dribble if she gets a COTH-soft landing.

hard to believe that is a 12.2 pony. How tiny are the other 2? 10 hands?

All of them lack muscle and have pot bellies

like others said, some conditioning might bring that back up

other than that she looks like a pretty little pony and if the temper suits would make a fun project.

I don’t think she’s ugly. I think it’s a really bad camera angle and an unfit pony with too much time and hay on her hands.

Her back does look like it’s dropped in the photo but if she were to lose some of that hay belly and develop a topline I’ll bet it’s not as bad as it looks.

She has a cute hackney face! She is just a bit droopy in the middle, and needs some work, and some better groceries. COTH to the rescue???

I don’t think she is ugly either, just a pasture animal with lots of hay. Not fit, bad haircut on forelock.

Hackneys are not “pretty” like the Welsh, American Shetland ponies. They have a horse-like head, sometimes a strong nose instead of a dish. They usually don’t get really fat all over, as many ponies do. Hay or grass belly would be more common if kept unworked.

They can be working fools, best with daily jobs, as they were designed for in the beginning of the Breed. They just go and go, last for years in work, have nice BIG feet, to take the work on the roads. The best ones have natural knee action even unshod, not flat movers. They will usually jump well too, when ridden.

Can be fun for adults to drive, rather like a zippy sports car with speed and quickness in turns.

I expect with a little work, a good haircut and trim, this pony would be quite good looking in a Hackney way, instead of the look she presents now. Most equines will be vastly improved with a good hair trim, some grooming, working using their back. Heck, even the Spanish Riding School stallions look MUCH more handsome under saddle, “together” than when grazing in a field! My friend’s Lippizan looks like the “old grey mare” out in the field, nothing like she moves or looks when ridden.

With how thin she is over the hips and back but big below, I would suspect that she is pregnant

With how thin she is over the hips and back but big below, I would suspect that she is pregnant[/QUOTE] Hay belly, worm load, or yes, pregnant. I’ve been pony shopping up here for a buddy for our pony and seen one with a suspiciously round belly like that also, but it takes a vet check to be certain.

It would be cool if someone here could give her a home. She’s little and broke to ride and drive. She would be great for a decent child rider. Maybe a lesson pony? Hope she doesn’t turn out to be a two for one deal.

Pregnancy could be a possibilty. People like to breed animals that are an unusual breed. If I’m not mistaken, I think this poor creature was on CL a few years ago with a trimmer look and more muscling. She was being sold with a cart, if I remember correctly. I wonder what happened to the cart?

I have seen a few Hackney and Hackney crosses floating around down here. Someone is definitely breeding them.

Agreed - that’s what the pic said to me too.
My Hackney gelding puts on weight only in his midsection, everywhere else stays HackneySleek
They are a fine-boned breed & I beg to differ with you, goodhors: I think they have very pretty heads. But then, I do love me a Roman Nose

She looks in better shape than my neighbors’ pair were last Summer - they recently bought back a mare & gelding they had probably 20 years ago who were both in sadder shape than that little girl.
Today both are looking darn good for ponies in their 20s.

I’ve got 6 freebies staring me in the face and a commitment to take at least one. Friends of DH lost the use of the 140 acre pasture and now have 2 acres. AND 45 sheep.
I’m not thrilled about this, not one has seen the farrier in months, no shots, no deworming, nothing up to date, (see my other little rant). Not been ridden since at least last year. I got told yesterday afternoon.

I will let my trainer know about this one, she may have a client, but my selection got made for me.

If COTHers want to put together a transport relay to get her from Ocala to eastern Iowa, I’d pay her ransom and take her in, pregnant or no. She’d look cute next to my foster Hackney, Scarlett O’Hairy.

Not nice. No such thing as ugly. How would you look if you were malnourished (a 3?), wormy, and possibly pregnant? Her back looks low because she has no muscle on her body and her belly is pulling her back low.

She is not an ugly plug, as you say. She is severely malnourished, wormy, and possibly in foal.

I see an older pony who has no muscles and who, even in the best of condition, has a bit of a sway back. Because of eating so much hay and not being in work, she has a hay belly, but my retirees have a bit of hay bellies and they are fed the best that money can buy.

Her coat is gleaming, her eyes are bright and I doubt that they put in a huge round bale of hay just for the picture.

I think she is very cute; I hope she ends up in a good home.
