Popper color

The hunting whip which was given to me has a short piece of leather where a popper once was. I was going to order a popper and noticed they are available in a variety of colors. What is the reason for the color choice?? Any limits or restrictions on selecting a color??

Let me see if I remember. (double check)

Black is definitely for regular members and clergy

Red male staff?

Blue female staff?

White - huntsman???

I have no idea how popper color came about. Seems to me people would just say - hey - I found someone’s whip, or hey - I lost my whip - anyone seen it.

Blue is for lady members of the field.

Red is for gentlemen members of the field.

Green is for juniors.

White is for huntsman and professional staff.

Thank you both very much! Great info and insight.

I have never read anything about the distinction of popper colors and never gave it a thought until I decided to bring mine up to code.

I’ve got a yellow popper, wonder what that means.

That I’m a chicken?

Stallion owner?

:lol::lol:

Remember the ribbon colors?

Green - Green horse

Red - kicker

Yellow - stallion

White - for sale

We put white ribbons on two of our sale horses at opening meet this thanksgiving and no one knew what they ment! Someone thought it was just for decoration, while others asked if they kicked…haha

Never knew this and never even thought to even ask, COOL!

I never knew, either! I was always just told to ditch the fake popper, whatever color it was, and put a real one on!

I have one of the Poppers that Eleanor Hartwell makes. It’s kind of a natural color.

Boy does it crack.

Holy Moly - I had NO idea she was doing a book on The Institute! I’ll have to tell the Masters of our Basset Pack.

I never heard the story behind the demise of the Italian popper. In my head, I had this vision of a wizened Neopolitan laboring away in an ancient shop with chickens running around in the courtyard. I figured the guy died and therefore - so did the “Italian popper”.

I never knew there was a reason for the different colours, I just figured it went with the Hunts colours!
I just cheat and use a lunge whip popper- cracks like crazy but have also been told an old piece of a string girth works well too.
