PVEC
I was there twice in 1976 for my AI and in 1978 for my II. Such good memories:yes:
PVEC
Iâm thinking you were there when John Lassiter was the Chief Instructor? I left in March or April of '76. Do you remember any of the horses, such as the one you looked after? Would you like to join the FB group? we already have 25 members and some you may remember. Check out the site anyway; just type in âPorlock vale studentsâ in the FB search box.

Does a week count??? If it would give me extra credit pointsâŠI loved every minute of it! I finally learned to look up when jumping down banks when my instructor would scream at me " LOOK AT WALES!!!"
Do they still have an equestrian center there?
PVEC
Absolutely it counts. I have heard the âLook at Walesâ cry before though did not hear it personally on my course. When were you there?
Unfortunately, the riding school recently closed but the house is available for weekly rentals. The photos indicate that many of the cross country jumps are still intact.
Please check out our Facebook page; you never know - you may find someone you remember! I donât know your email or I would send you a link, but just type in âporlock vale studentsâ in the FB search box and that will take you there.

I read âThe Horsemastersâ about a dozen times as a kid.
I so wanted to go to Porlock Vale!
My big dream was to attend Prolock Vale when I was 10 years old after seeing The Horsemasters Disney movie way back in 1966! One of my best buds who is also my wonderful trainer, Betsey Pack is a Porlock Vale alumniâIâll pass this on to her! Do you have the book Porlock Vale Riding School 1946 - 1961? I think I got it on Amazon; itâs written by the founderâs daughter I believeâŠlots of history and pics.
My dream was to do the âHorsemastersâ course after reading the book âThe Horsemastersâ way back in the 60âs. I must have been about 10 years old. Lo and behold, in my ripe mid-forties I took myself off to England (Yorkshire Riding Centre) and Scotland (Gleneagles) and did intensive BHS training. I even bought a wisp and I was actually asked to demonstrate its proper use during my Stage 1 exam!
P.S. I still have the book â itâs a cherished possession!
Porlock was my dream as well after watching the movie! (I bought both the movie and book off Ebay recently!) Never got to go but went to Potomac Horse Center where several of the instructors had gone or worked at Porlock Vale!
Porlock Vale
That movie certainly generated interest in the school; unfortunately I was not allowed to watch the night it aired - something about a poor mark on a test. Jacqueline Peck who wrote the book about the early days at Porlock is in our Facebook group and has shared loads of memories and photos. Please check out our Facebook page!

Hi Marylouise ~
Welcome to the forums! We try to avoid crossposting threads to mulitple forums to reduce clutter and keep info together, so we merged your threads into one here in Off Course, which is seen by participants of multiple disciplines.
If youâd prefer it to be in another forum, just send me a note, and I can move it over there.

OMG, you too!! I had some assignment that I hadnât completed yet, and I wasnât allowed to watch it that night, either! One of the worst punishments, ever, and I remember every second of it, while the rest of the family was down in the living room with the TV and a big bowl of popcorn, and I was on lockup in my bedroom! Too funny!
Going there was my dream, as well. And my Monstrpony was the reincarnation of that big horse with the messy stall (tho he never lived up to the XC ride at the end).
Hello! What a nice âmemory jogâ this thread is. I got my BHSAI from Porlock in 1971. I just dug my old pictures out and here are the horses I have photos of: Dunkery (the mare I took care of), Bracken, Teal, Whiskey, Picadilly, Sport, Jigsaw, Scrumpy, Aer Lingus, Rambler (Rosy), Killarney, Roulette, Thistle, Panther, Piege, Madam, Sunrise, Selworthy, Benâs Pride (Pridley), Honeymorn, Recorder, and Jonathan. The instructors (whose last names I do not remember) who were there at that time were Josephine, Cheryl, and Tony; Colonel John Crawford was the head of the school and occasionally gave us lectures or instruction. I have some old 8mm movies of a couple of our jumping lessons, as well as of us swilling down the yard (we even had a song that we sang while we did it, and I still remember one verse and the refrain!). Thanks for bringing back some fond memories.

OK, youâre the boss, but I donât see that someone searching in âDressageâ would necessarily also look in âOff Courseâ.
Thx for the heads up.
