Possible FIP Diagnosis - I'm Devistated!

So my little Sphynx cat Lucy went to the vet yesterday because she’s just not thriving. She’s the one that we’ve had diarrhea issues with in the past and we finally got that under control. She’s lost 2 pounds in 3 weeks weighing in at 4 pounds yesterday. She’s simply a walking skeleton. Vet believes she has the dry form of FIP. Her blood work showed severe non-regenerative anemia. All other values - kidney, liver, T4, etc. were normal. I asked the vet how sure he was and he said “80-90% sure”. She eats RAVENOUSLY. No vomiting or diarrhea (but had severe diarrhea previously) but is literally wasting away to nothing. I simply do not want this to be FIP. I just don’t want to lose this cat. She’s a sweet heart and so young - only 3 years old! If anyone has any ideas of what else this might be, it would be appreciated!

I’m so sorry :frowning:

I wish I had something else to say but I Really don’t, these symptoms really do sound like dry FIP

Hug your kitty and hold her. Sometimes they respond for a while to supportive care, give her lots of hugs and kisses in the time you still have left.

I’m so sorry for you and her!

If it helps you any, my dry-FIP kitty made it nearly four years after the diagnosis with a lot of supportive care, including a supplement called Marin ( I think) that supported his liver. He also came down with nasty ringworm regularly because his immune system was shot, and had to have systemic treatment for that. Although it broke my heart, he made it clear when he’d finally had enough.

So sorry Snowflake.
Denosyl and Marin is def something to look into.

I’m so sorry that you had to hear this news, Snowflake. Hopefully, the medications that others have mentioned will sustain her for a good, long while.

Feline Infectious Peritonitis. It’s a fatal disease with no standard treatment protocol. Some experimental/off label treatments that have only been tested on a few cats but no solid studies have been done with cats studied with a confirmed diagnosis and a control/placebo group in place. The studies were just giving meds to a few cats who were thought to possibly have FIP. The meds are expensive and didn’t show any great improvement in life span in the sparse studies that have been done. It’s essentially akin to stage 4-5 terminal cancer. She’s going to die and there is nothing I can do about it. :frowning:

Jingles & ((HUGS)) for your dear cat and you ~

I’m so sorry to read this ~ ((hugs))

Wrap your dear cat in your love for as long as you are together ~

Jingles & AO ~

I’m so sorry! It’s so difficult when they are that young. Major hugs!

So sorry to hear this. Explore all the possibilities and medications. FIP is the most heartbreaking disease. I’ve been there. Had an outbreak when I was “rescuing” some kittens. I read everything I could get my hands on. I also switched to clumping clay litter from the “grain based” litter I had been using, because I read someplace that the bentonite clay was an antiviral. I only saved one kitten, she is 6 or 7 years old now, I still rescue and haven’t had another FIP.

I had never heard of FIP but I know what its like to lose one way before its time. I’m so sorry, try to be strong for her. I am thinking of you

Here is more info on FIP from people wondering what it is: http://www.vet.ohio-state.edu/assets/pdf/education/courses/vcs724/lectures/sherding/fip.pdf

Sorry to hear about your kitty. Jingling for her.

Oh, hugs to you! I’ve been there and it just breaks your heart. Jingles that your dear, sweet kitty finds peace and relief.

So very, very sorry, Snowflake. Hugs and jingles.

I can’t pull up the link to more info (at work) but I am wondering what causes it?

I am so sorry about your kitty. ~hugs to you and her~~

Snowflake - according to the article, more diagnostics can be done. Are you able to do them to be absolutely sure? The vet said 80-90%, but if it was me, I’d want to know 100% what I was dealing with.

I am so sorry Snowflake, FIP is devestating. I lost a young cat (1.5 yrs old) to the wet form. I think he had the early symptoms when I adopted him and his brother when I look back at things. I’ve heard that getting them on a raw diet or at least getting them to eat some raw meat is beneficial. I had switched him and his brother to a raw diet when I adopted them and I think it may have given him more time (quality time).

FIP can be difficult to diagnose and often the diagnosis is reached after ruling a lot of other things out. Really really hoping it’s not what your kitty has. It’s a terrible terrible disease and I watch my other kitty-boy closely. If he gets “meh” about eating or a bit off my heart just drops and I immediately start thing the worst.

So sorry Snowflake

Here is one vet’s working protocol for FIP treatment.
