Not my horse.
Aged draft horse, was on 24/7 turnout with a shed
and round bales and pasture. Never left farm. No equine visitors.
One other draft with her for years till companion recently euthed for cancer.
Recently labored breathing
Thick snots but not unusual. History of nasal tumor
Vet testing for strangles.
Could she have had dormant bacteria in guttural pouches that re-emerged?
Mystified.
Maybe, but I’d not start with zebras. Tooth abscess? Infected sinus cavity?
This horse has never left the farm, has had a nasal tumor in the past and is now having labored breathing and you are thinking it’s strangles? why?
Because the vet suggested testing for it.
Probably a return of the nasal tumor causing an infection.
One of my dogs had a sinus tumor and his main symptom was nasal bleeding but he also sneezed a lot.
What kind of tumor was it? As that should give you an idea on whether or not it will likely return or metastize.
If the snot has a nasty odor then infection from tooth or other is likely.
If no odor then possibly allergy – my ‘Mystery Illness’ horse had gloppy snots that were greenish yellow but also white at times (no smell) and his breathing was a bit labored. It cleared up with no treatment = allergy.
Strangles carrier is a possiblity. Test will confirm.
My first guess is it’s somehow related to the nasal tumor.
I would guess the vet is just covering their bases.
Strangles can get there on footwear and clothes too, so maybe that is what the vet is thinking?
Horse was struggling to breathe and anorexic, owner decided to euthanize.
I’m sorry, condolences to all involved.
Thank you. Testing came back some other bacterium, not strangles.
