Best and worst daily use ulcer preventative supplement… and go! Plz include your personal experience for either positive or negative. TIA!

I think the best ulcer preventative is global management. Reduce stress, constant access to forage, feed hay preferably alfalfa before riding, minimal grain grain, don’t feed grain on an empty stomach. All these things reduce acid splash to the top half of the stomach.

That the horse has proven he cannot remain ulcer-free until he’s been on X supplement

Supplementing to prevent something that hasn’t happened yet, doesn’t mean the supp worked.

I’ve had good results with Uckele GUT, Succeed Oral Paste Syringes, Nutracell Labs Ulceraide Liquid, Equine Elixirs Ulceraser …other people have had good results with Alimend

I have a couple of ulcer horses and put all of mine on (at least) a modified ulcer-addressing diet at shows. I’ve whittled down my program over the years to the following:

Starting with an Orchard grass diet and base grain of some sort.
Daily:
+1 flake of alfalfa
+Apple Cider Vinegar (1 oz in grain)
+SmartDigest Ultra (or for some of my horses, Ulcereraser)

Horses are all also on a flax based general supplement (platinum performance). All of the things above stay in the diet at shows for the ulcery-types. Once we get to shows all horses get the following as tolerable (e.g. one mare doesn’t get alfalfa, one gelding doesn’t get anything flax-based):

At shows:
Omeprazole (as the “big guns”) and/or Stomach Happy (which is a by-prescription-only Chinese herb, and something I absolutely love)
Ulcereraser for all horses
Alfalfa for all horses who can handle it (some of mine can’t take the increased protein)

I’ve tried so many other products over the years (like purina outlast and many other highly recommended things) that haven’t made much of a difference (though I will stress the words: “on mine”, which certainly doesn’t mean they don’t work!).

It pulls up if you search here, but will also comment that I do not ever put horses on maintenance omeprazole outside of horseshows. And if I use omeprazole I make sure they have something that supports the hind gut (e.g. succeed, smartdigest ultra) at the same time.
