Potentially awkward - sweating thru breeches at shows

Yeah, I’ve just given up this summer. Anyone who rides with me knows at this point that I sweat, so…it is what it is. And it’s HOT!

True!! I find the Struck breeches to be the best for hiding sweat…still get a line when it’s hot out but it dries much quicker than my TSs or Equilines. CT and Samshield do pretty good too, but pricier!

I’ve heard period panties work well for sweating “down there”. I don’t show anymore and when I ride I wear black or navy breeches but I would try them with lighter colored breeches. I have the Ariat Pro breeches in navy and maybe my next pair will be a lighter color hearing everyone’s praises

Has anyone tried disposable adult diapers? I was non-weight bearing for about 24 months and bought the Always version for when I couldn’t get to the bathroom fast enough from bed. I thought they would be awful, and instead from the moment I put them I didn’t notice them at all. Very thin and comfortable. Now, I wasn’t running around in them, so I have no idea whether they’d be detectable beneath breeches. But adding my experience nonetheless.

I use Always pads for cough-related bladder leaks. They come in different strengths and lengths and are surprisingly thin.

I am not sure they would solve the problem of sweat running down the back though.
Maybe some of it.

I guess I must sweat more than I am supposed to because when I used pads for their designed use, hot days were a challenge because the stick does not stay stuck to sweaty undergarments. So I can imagine the same problem would occur if one was wearing them to soak up sweat.

Nah, same here.

I sweat like crazy, specifically where my legs meet my torso, like a bikini line of sweat. I’ll be drenched from belt to thigh, all the way around, and unfortunately it starts in the crotch area (so I look like I peed myself ).

I’ve found that quick dry fabrics, dark breeches when possible, and clinical strength antiperspirant in the worst spots work best. But I’m 0% worried about aluminum or whatever, and the “natural” stuff just. doesn’t. cut it. I’m not worried about smell as much as looking like I fell in the water trough butt first .

I remember as a teenager that I didn’t have breech sweat as much as head sweat. Even with a hat on I’d look GROSS, all the way down my hair. Now, my head is decently manageable - nothing a fluff and some dry shampoo can’t handle (and a hat, usually), but the breeches sweat is worse. That said, I’m not horse showing all day in the 100 degree heat like I was back then.

I wonder if the water resistant type breeches would help. Granted, they are designed to keep water out not in, but might still ‘work’, especially in situations like shows where you want to look your best. I’m specifically thinking of those Weather or Not breeches that I’ve seen at my local tack store.

Haven’t read through all the comments, but people are raving about the Mycarpe anti sweat products. Says they work really really well. I haven’t seen any riders use it yet, and I’m not a huge sweater except when it’s a million degrees outside.

Ugh, yes, this heat has been the worst. I’m a fan of liners, water-resistant breeches, and, believe it or not, period underwear works a charm. Brands like Thinx are great.

This thread’s title always cracks me up. Potentially?!

Such good ideas, though. Such a wise and generous community here.

Only horse sports think it’s awkward to be sweaty when being active. I’ve never heard anyone participating in any other sport on the planet ask how to not have their clothes show sweat. We do an athletic event. In the heat. In non-athletic clothes, no-less.

Why is sweating embarrassing?? People sweat. Grow up.

Yes, I think they do help. I give breeches the water flick test to see if the water shows or not. Some absorb right away, and I steer clear of those. But if the water stays on the surface, or a least doesn’t discolor the fabric, I wear those. :yum: Now, they probably don’t keep you cooler, but I’m okay with that. I just hate looking like I have “swamp a**” (yes, I learned that term here on COTH )

Bumping this thread – what are we wearing to prevent swamp ass these days? I had a lesson the other day and wore my TS and it straight up looked like I peed myself. OVER IT!!

Would love current recos to prevent embarrassment (bonus points if they don’t cost a kidney) – and I’m especially challenged since I live in Texas!

FreeRide, all the way. It’s 99 degrees and almost the same % humidity and you can barely tell I’m sweating! They also dry fast (TS do NOT), so I’m usually dry by the time I get home vs cold and damp. Dark colors help too, and I don’t feel hot in them.

I love my TS but fell in love with the FR Lux. I haven’t tried anything else and they certainly don’t hide anything (they’re basically Lululemon leggings with grip and belt loops), but that doesn’t bother me at all. They stay up, are cool, cute, and comfortable, and they don’t make me look like I peed myself :woman_facepalming:t3::joy:

Now that this thread is revived, I’m seeing your comment and find it belittling and not helpful. We all sweat, sure, but there are a few things that make riders feel self-conscious about this sweat, and “growing up” won’t solve any of them.

First, as we riders go around a course, our rear ends are sticking out at eye level for all to see. There, front and center, is our sweaty bum. I think it’s reasonable to want to find a way to avoid this visual.

Second, IME, a sweaty bum draws saddle soap, conditioner, years-old staining, etc right up into breech fabric. I don’t know how many pairs of tan breeches I’ve scrubbed for myself & dds after a hot day of showing, no matter how meticulously our saddles were cleaned.

Here’s my advice: no need to grow up, just use underwear designed to be worn during your period (i.e. Knix). Seems to work!

Yeah I don’t mind not-smoothing capabilities but feeling AND looking like I peed my pants is just not the vibe. It’s also just not cute in photos. I’ll look into FR!

I feel you! It bums me out because I love the fit of TS, but I’m over the sweat marks. I really hope they come out with a more technical fabric option at some point.

I recently bought a pair of horse pilot x-balance breeches. Here are my thoughts on them.
Pros: excellent at hiding sweat, very comfortable, love the boot sock, knee patches are pretty grippy, love the side phone pocket, sleek look, nice amount of compression/substantial feeing fabric
Cons: somewhat pricey (~200), fabric has started piling in some areas (around where the top of my half chaps hit and in the belt area) after 3 months of wear

I have not tried the traditional breech style but my Maya Delorez compression legging style were surprisingly comfortable on a hot, sticky day. Great technical fabric that feels much cooler on than you would think given the weight.

Count me in as someone who hates to show a sweaty bum even in a lesson or schooling. I hate it. And I’m fairly grown up. (Played hockey, and of course sweat up a storm…but it never went through to my clothing…pads don’t show sweat! Now my face was another story!)
