Potentially Stupid Question About Cee Coach

Back Story:
Our region was just down graded to the Red Zone due to COVID and the new restrictions now state no yelling so my coach has been using the CEE Coach. I had my first lesson with it yesterday. My horse was unusually naughty and spooky and having my trainer calmly helping me with the gentle voice in my ear was tremendous! Before when I got stuck or overwhelmed I’d kind of tune everything out including my trainer who would be yelling to try and grab my attention as I couldn’t hear her. The gentle voice right in my ear really allowed me to stay calm and focus on the correction.

Question:
Can the Cee Coach be used in the show ring? Is there a rule about this type of device? Is it cheating?

If you are talking about having a coach talking to you in your ear like headphones, then yes cheating in a competition. In some competitions you will be eliminated if someone calls out instructions from the crowd.

I can see an exception for partly deaf riders to have one for a dressage test to be called, but only the test can be called, no instructions to the rider about their riding. That is definitely cheating.

Thought so.

Better use my lessons to get show ring ready!

It’s against USEF rules:
HU106 Equipment

  1. Light pads and bar shoes are permissible, however, bar shoes indicate a weakness and in Conformation classes a judge may penalize accordingly. All artificial appliances, including but not limited to nasal strips, boots, wraps and bandages are prohibited. In the case of inclement weather competition management may permit the use of bell boots.
  2. Electronic Communication Devices
    a. No mounted exhibitor may wear or carry an electronic communication device (i.e., cellular telephone, pager,
walkie talkie, iPod, etc.) while in the competition ring. The penalty for wearing or carrying a forbidden device if
observed by the judge may be elimination from the class during which the device was worn or carried.
    b. Electronic communication devices used for purposes of coaching, etc., between competitors and individuals
outside the ring shall be prohibited in all classes.
    c. Exhibitors who have a chronic condition may apply for a Presidential Modification exempting them from the provisions of this rule in accordance with GR153. Riders may not use these devices in over fences classes.
    d. An exhibitor who has a chronic condition and has previously been granted at least one annual presidential modification related to the condition, may submit an application for approval of a special three-year presidential modification related to the same condition. The application must be accompanied by sufficient supporting documentation that the condition is unlikely to improve during the three-year period.

Yes that is what lessons are for.

This thread reminds me how annoying the “no cell phone” rule is. I am forever leaving my phone with a stranger at the ingate or going up to the ring with no way to contact my trainer who is meeting me there.

You can’t use it in the show ring, but I love it in lessons.

Also, NO YELLING is a covid rule now? That’s ridiculous.

Canada too (I believe OP is in Ontario):

ARTICLE A907 ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION DEVICES
The use of personal electronic communication devices by a competitor or trainer
while in the ring being judged or during ribbon presentation is forbidden under
penalty of elimination. The use of cellular phones or other similar communication
devices, including computers, by judges while in the ring (including center ring),
judges’ box, judges’ stand or on any part of a course during competition is strictly
prohibited except when judges are discharging their official duties.
Exception: Competitors with physical disabilities, who must have an EC ParaDressage Dispensation Certificate or the EC Classification Master List that
authorizes the use of a communication device. (See also Article A214)

Oh yes, no yelling - and no loud music is to be played in stores. So people don’t have to yell to speak to each other…its starting to remind me of the movie Footloose…

There are stores that play music loud enough that people have to yell at each other? I guess I should be thankful that I have not encountered this.

No kidding! I have no idea why this is even a rule. I’ve never heard loud music in any store that I’ve shopped at…

Those are about the stupidest least helpful rules I’ve heard of regarding Covid safety. Is someone going to call the police on your trainer yelling instructions? Ridiculous waste of resources.

Stay out of Hollister lol

I thought so too but I was just reading an advice column in the local paper where it said a co-worker’s constant whistling could be a potentially dangerous virus spreader. So perhaps yelling might be sending more germs into the air? I’m just guessing about that though. I haven’t heard the no yelling rule anywhere but this forum so far.

I believe they have figured out that singing has a much greater risk of spreading the virus, after a huge number of people have gotten infected during choir practice. So maybe yelling works on the same theory.

We also have bans on singing.

The poor kids in childcare and school…

“Instruction of any class, organized program, or organized activity that is not a sport must:
i.be via microphone (if the instructor would otherwise have to raise their voice beyond normal conversation level); and
ii.not encourage singing, shouting, or loud talking”

If it’s this contagious that singing or loud talking can get people sick, then why are we having organized activities or programs? Here locally school is out until January but we’re still playing football with crowds in the stands. Complete with people shouting without masks.

OP is in Ontario. We don’t have sporting events with spectators allowed here, so it’s consistent with our rules right now.
