A friend of my mom’s who raises cattle purchased 2 donkeys the other week and asked Mom if he could use pour-on dewormer on them. She didn’t know & asked me, but I don’t know either. Anybody here know why or why not you could/couldn’t?
They are more-or-less feral, so will need a lot of work before tube dewormer would be do-able. I did tell her about the pelleted feed-thru options, but just curious now. Thank you!
They’re not appropriate for horses, so unlikely they’d work for donkeys?
Unless they’re super suspicious, you can just mix paste dewormer in with a little sweet feed. Most of them are actually fairly palatable.
Ok, so a chance to search this question shows that it will burn equids b/c their skin isn’t as thick as bovines. Thanks for the help! I had always “known”/assumed not to, I just didn’t know a specific “why” answer for her.
NO to pour-on worms for any donkeys. Their skin is much thinner than cattle skin and they will likely get an open wound from the medication. Our local Vet treated a horse who had pour-on wormer applied. Horse had an open wound on his back area, lost hair, was unusable for over 3 months until the hole finally closed. Horse was still very sensitive over the wound for another couple months, no bareback riding until the following summer.
A simple and quite effective alternative is the Freedom45 “spot on” treatment. Works quite well but has to be repeated every 14 days.

That seems like it is for flies not for internal parasites. I think they need to deworm the donkeys for internal worms.
Oh, yeah. :o
Well, that’s what happens when you post before the coffee has become effective.
Freedom45 is still good stuff for external parasites.

Find a cookie they like–gingersnaps, vanilla wafers, graham crackers, etc.and spoil them for a few days, then put de-wormer between 2 (may have to split the dose between several sets of cookies at first). Watch the de-wormer paste go down the hatch! I do this for my 2 mini donks and my hinny–becomes a real treat for them if it’s the only time they get the actual cookies.
